Does anyone out there know what the standards are for Euro Reg plates. I was read the riot act by one of our superb traffic core yesterday morning whil sitting in traffic on the East wall road. My plates are Euro style, big legible letters, however they are very slightly italic and have a silver shadow to match the car colour (silver 01 520). They were on it when I bought it. I am not mad on them but she lokes them and she drives it most of the time so doesn't bother me. Anyway I was accused of purchasing the plates to deliberstely evade speed camera detection and told that if he saw them again on the car I would be fined €1270 per plate (€2540 in total). Has anyone else had similar problems or details. Glad to see that the traffic core are applying themselves to road safety...... sorry tax collection! Killian - Thanks for that, I had checked that already and according to that anything on the plates is illegal such as BMW in bottom, Garage details on the plate, colours etc. I suppose then that techinically if we had a plate that accounted for the new EU member sates then the number of stars above 12 would also cause a problem. So its off to buy a new set of perspex plates - Any recomendations for North / West Dublin. |

Martin, I just got new perspex plates. Did a bit of looking around and Artane Auto Centre oppostie the ESB shop on the Malahide Road just on the town side of the Artane Roundabout supplied a lovely pair of perspex standard plates for €20. Ended up getting new plates for 3 mates there too once they saw them - seems that getting a decent set of plates is harder than you'd think! John PS.Don't know if this is true (someone'll probably tell me it's bull) but I remember being told that the 12 stars weren't one for each of the original countries but was the number of stars making up the halo on the statue of Mary in Strasbourg where some treaty or other was signed!

John I'll try Artane so as I have been quoted €24 for standard metal ones. Might as well order as set for the other car at that price. Easier for the speed cameras to identify me properly....................... As for the stars, well looks like we're both wrong - see below, I suppose why make it logical to the common man?!?!?!?! Do the number of stars on the European flag represent the Member States? The number of stars on the European Flag has always remained the same, ie 12. It was adopted by the European Community in 1986. This same flag had been used to represent "Europe" by a different organisation, the Council of Europe since 1956. In 1946, the Council of Europe established a committee to discuss the issue of a "european" emblem. Many different proposals were discussed but the final result was the flag you see today. 12 gold stars on a blue background. The 12 stars were chosed as twelve is the symbol of perfection; there were 12 apostles, 12 hours in the day, 12 hours in the night, 12 months of the year, 12 signs of the zodiac. The colours blue and gold were the original colours of the Count Richard Coudenhove Kalergi who first proposed a Pan European Union in 1923. See also emblems of the European Union. |

The Council of Europe set up the committee in 1946 and they adopted the flag in 1956. Now that's a good 10 years work!! Did they not remeber the baker's dozen - that's 13????

Apparently not, but then 2 sixpacks do make 12 which is fairly perfect to me. Six cylinders is half of 12 and 24 valves is double 12, Maybe BMW developed its model on factors of that perfect 12 number also. Anyway going to call for the plates on my way home this evening

Better to get the new plates fitted as soon as you can. If the Guards will arrest a mother of 8 and drag her off the jail for non payment of a 160EUR fine, leaving the 12 year old kid in charge of the rest, they won't have any qualms in nicking you for your existing plates.
Maybe they thought they were photo-reflective plates? |

have a look at http://www.fancyplates.com/ You can make a really tasteful plate from this lot without going over the top and apparently they are legal. |

He accused me of putting them on to evade speed cameras, but they were on the car when I bought it, actually I bought it from a man of the cloth (Church if Ireland), somehow I think he put them on to match the ccolour of the car rather than evade the cameras. From reading about the cameras I don't think there is anything that prevents them being seen aside from leaving them filthy Looked around for as much info on plates as possible because I was so ticked off with him but based on this document SI 318/92 anything other than the 12 stars with IRL on the blue and the standard letters on a pure white background is illegal as far as I can see. 3. ( a ) The plate on which an identification mark is exhibited (in this Schedule referred to as "the plate") shall not contain any words, letters, numbers, emblems or other marks of any kind other than those required under this Schedule. I reckon its a quota game that they pick the responsible people that they can find their address and will show up in court, pay the fines etc rather than go after the no tax, no insurance unroadworthy car brigade cos it takes too much time and requires some real work. I'll probably be arrested on the way home now for that comment........ |

not according to the links I mentioned before. Quote: The registration number consisting of numbers and letters must be in black on a white reflective background The flag of the EU and the letters "IRL" must be placed on the left-hand side of the plate, the flag comprising 12 gold stars in a circle, the letters in white beneath it, all on a blue reflective background. No other numbers, letters, marks, etc., should appear on your registration plate. |

Very good on the Newbie confusion device, when do we stop being Newbies by the way? Just looked at fancyplates site and they have a disclaimer that states "Plates ordered from the Standard Irish plates Constructor are suitable for use on public roads in Ireland. Some plates ordered from our Fancy Plates Constructor may not meet requirements for use on public roads." Edited by BM Fan |

What about all those dealers, especially the BMW ones who are notorious for it, that put their name on the plate at the bottom? |

Guess they're illegal also. I suppose its not illegal to sell them but is illegal to use them, bit like radar. Really depends on the Gaurd and his attitude at the time.

In other words, this bog-standard format: is acceptable (if you ignore the UK registration). This is the ordinary pressed aluminium plate available from most / all good Irish motor factors, in this case Ennis Motor Factors. |

pretty much. It has become so strict that even incorrect sizing of the characters can result in an NCT failure.

...but this:
probably is not. This is the rear plate on my old Six, as supplied by Fancy Plates. Although the character sizing is standard Irish, as is the Euroflag emblem, the yellow background is not (Fancy Plates turned it out in this colour to my commission, as the UK police - Bedfordshire Constabulary - stipulated to me on the one and only occasion that they pulled me up for having the white background on the rear). At the base of the plate, my little "advert" for the Clare Equestrian Centre would probably not be acceptable either.... |
