Simon

I was wondering if you could help me out with some oil advice for my Beamer?  She is a 1998 S E39 523i SE with 48k on the clock and has FBMWSH.

I am planning on changing the oil in between the oil service indicater I would guess approx 4000-5000 miles but still get it serviced by BMW or a.n.other garage (still to decide) when the lights indicate.

I have no mods to the car or engine, I don't drive it like a boy racer, get an average of 30 mpg on my commute to work thru town and motorway.

Sorry can't remember if its 10w-40 or 20w-40 that BMW fill her up with at the services.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Andrew

Andrew,

The manufacturer recommends 5w-40 or 0w-30 for your car so I would stick to this.

I would recommend a BMW Approved 5w-40 as a preference for all year round use.

You can always drop me an email for a list and prices.

Cheers

Simon

Our website has been updated http://www.opieoils.co.uk/lubricants.htm with new technical data sheets on the MOTUL range of oils including the Double Ester 300V range. There is also a BMW specific LL01 5w-30 there as well.

Happy browsing!

Simon

I drive a 97 M3 Evo which has covered 54k. I've recently had the car serviced at a BMW main dealer and they've used Castrol GTX Magnatec.I believe this to be a semi-synthetic 10w-40 grade oil.

Is this lubricant BMW approved and the correct grade for my engine or would you advise using an alternative?

Your advice is much appreciated

Regards

The Castrol GTX Magnatec has been put in your car as cost option from the garage, I hope they did not charge you too much for it. I do not belive it is BMW approved but I will have to check.

The recomended grade for your car is a 5w-40 full synthetic for all year round use.

Personally I would move to a BMW approved full synthetic 5w-40 especially if the car sees some spirited use. It would be a shane not to put in the best for these beasts.

For a list of BMW approved oils look here http://www.opieoils.co.uk/lubricants.htm and have a browse.

Hey simon,

I have:

99' z3 coupe 2.8L M52, 56000miles

mods are or will be, lightweight flywheel, pulleys, intake manifold and remap.

I am looking for engine oil, gearbox oil (i don't trust the ling life thing) and diff oil (not LSD)

For the engine at the moment I am using shell Helix ultra 5W40.

I change the oil every 6000miles.

What do you recommand?

Thanks

Ludo

Hi Simon

I have a couple of questions for you

I have a standard 93 540i auto v8 4lt which has done 120k, After reading your previous posts I think maybe the Siklolene ProS 5w-40 offers the best protection and will use it or what ever you recommend. But I don't know what has been used in the past ie mineral, and dont want to cause any problems with leaks or damaging seal, to date she has full dealer SH, but again dont know what BM has used in the past 11 yeasrs in the way of mineral/synthetic.

I do mainly short ish town driving and 5-6k a year. What I'm after is the best protection cost is not a factor, your advice would be much appreciated...

Also what oil should be used in the gearbox, the hand book says its lifetime oil filled, but after 120k I thought it should be changed and asked a local gearbox specialist and they agreed, they used Dextron 2 and said this would be fine. But it seems strange that only the 540 is like this, so is the oil they used OK or is there something they dont know about. Again thanks for your time information

I will email you so you can send me some prices TA..

       Kev

Kev,

The 5w-40 is the recomended grade for the car. The Silkolene Pro S is at the top end of the oils to be used and is well recomended.

The gearbox can vary, where the gearbox is filled from will be a tag, it will either say "ATF OIL" or "Special Oil", if it says atf then the dexron II is fine and I would recomend the Fuch ATF, if it says special oil than I you will need to buy the oil direct from BMW as it is a with held spec, however on the face of it the atf should be fine.

Will send you some prices.

Cheers

hi simon

i have a 1991 e30 325 sport. it has done 111,000 and has been treat well, i mainly do short trips to work and the engine doesn't really have time to warm up to full operating temp. i was thinking of full synth 5w40 as this seems to be better for colder engine temps.

if you have any better suggestions or can recommend any manufacturers/specfic products then i would appreciate it.

cheers

Billgates,

You are spot on with the grade.

If you want some good brands, the top options would be Silkolene and Motul, folowed by Fuchs.

E-mail me for a full price list at sales@opieoils.co.uk

Cheers

Simon.

Simon

There has been a thread on the forum asking for opinions on "flushing" your engine at an oil change.

The old fashioned types ( my father etc) advise me this isn a good idea

What are your thoughts, and which products would you suggest if you think its a good idea ?

Best Wishes

Nigel

Flushing is ok, but using flushing oils and addatives are not.

Some of these flushes are kerosene or parafin mix and can cause more harm then good.

If you want to flush the engine do it like this;

Flushing Procedure (Don’t use flushing oils or additives)

  1. Warm up engine to get oil circulating
  2. Turn off engine and drain old oil
  3. Fill with new oil to minimum (you will be wasting this)
  4. Warm up engine to get oil circulating
  5. Turn  off engine, drain new oil and change filter
  6. Fill to marker on dipstick

 Cheers

do you really feel this is necesary in the 21st centuary?

the oils today are so much more advanced

I can believe that if you are building a new engine with new parts for a classic or one that had been modified further than even bmw expected but flushing new oil through an engine has to be a thing of the past

Flushes these days are generall not needed as modern oils have all the detergents needed to keep the engine clean.

If you buy a car that has used poor oil and not beed changed regulary then a good flush (without addatives) can be a good idea.

Simon,

What oil for my 325TDS?

Am currently using Chevron 10W/40 Diesel Oil which I think is okay.  I change the oil every 5K religiously.

I've also tried ECP 15W/40 which was okay, and Duckhams 10W/40 which lost me 5MPG!

Also, what Oil for the Diff and (Manual) Box?  I was thinking 75W/90 in both?
