I am told some manuals use ATM exept the 6 speed and the final drive oil is life long oil??  If I was to do a full oil change i.e. engine, gearbox and axle, which oils would you recommend and if I bought them all from you, may I be so bold as to squeeze a bit of discount from you (of course I'd recommend you to my friends!!)

Mike,

As Stephen B has suggest below, the Fuchs Titan Supersyn SL 5w-40 is an ideal choice for the engine.

The gearbox could be tricky, you really need to look on the gearbox, there will be a sticker and this will tell you what oil you need.

Let me know what the sticker is and I will have something for it.

Cheers

Simon.

540 V8 Mike - I have a similar car (1994M?) and I have been using Fuchs Titan Supersyn SL 5w-40 (fully synthetic) from Oilman for engine oil changes for some time now and the car certainly seems to go very well on it. Price is good too.

Mine has 157,000 on the original engine and no Nikasil problems.  Motor has never sounded sweeter.

Regards

Sorry for delay.

Certianly a decent 5w-40, 0w-40 or 5w-30 synthetic would be more suitable than dragging a thick oil around the engine.

The advantages of the lower viscosity are:

Better Fule Economy

Less engine wear

Less heat due to friction.

No problems to change the grade.

Cheers

Is  it the wrong oil for the engine and if so is it  possible to change to what you recommend with no  problems.   Thankyou

It is PAO based, the Silkolene and Motul ones contain ester

Do you know if the SAF-XO is ester based?

I understand that the Motul Gear 300 is.

Thanks

It is indeed SAF-XO or any decent fully synthetic 75w-90.

I've 3 that will be fine.

Motul Gear 300 75w-90

Silkolene SYN 5 75w-90

Castrol SAF XO

Cheers

Thanks for your reply.

I don't have a limited slip diff, so presumably, I should be using the SAF-XO, or is the SAF-XJ OK as well?

Cheers.

For the Auto box the Fuchs ATF 4000 Dexron III is ideal, if you wanted a full synthetic one then look at the Amsoil ATF.

For the final drive a proper BMW diff oil is ideal like the Castrol SAF XJ.

Hi,

I need to replace the automatic gearbox oil in my 1995 316i Compact (M43 engine).

I've looked on your site and seen the Titan ATF 4000 (5L) and was wondering if this was suitable.

Are there any other brands I should be looking at in the same price range and is there a synthetic alternative?

I also need some final drive oil. The handbook says brand name hypoid gear oil, can you recommend one and also is there a synthetic alternative?

Thanks!

Stephen,

Success!

The Mobil ‘SHC’ ‘Synthetic Hydro Carbon’ oils are high VI EP gear oils based on PAO synthetics. The 630 is SAE 140, 80w-140 or 75w-140 grade in gear oil viscosity.

We have two that match the spec:

Castrol SAF-XJ 75w-140

Motul Gear FF 75w-140

Regards

Simon

Stephen,

If you can find out the spec and especially the viscosity from your Dealer I'm sure we can supply a matched product from our range.

I'm looking into the specs of SHC 630

Cheers

Simon,

The oil specified for my Z1 gearbox as per the label on the side is BMW part No 81.22.9.407.305 and is described as a "special oil".  Having enquired at my local dealer it is a fluid they don't stock or use but I can buy 60 litres for £250 + VAT - I need 1.25 litres!!  The Owners' Manual refers to Mobil SHC 630.

Do you stock a product that meets this specification and why is it special?

Regards

Hi,

As the quality option a good BMW approved 5w-40 full synthetic, the cost option is the minimum spec 10w-40 semi as listed in the hand book.

If the car is used hard then synthetic would be the best option.

Cheers

I have a 92 535is and is now so confused about what oil to put in. Everyone is saying different, the yanks are saying 5W-30, 0W-40 etc and BMW says 10W-40.

Im thinking something like a 5W-30 as its done 190K but with top end performance rebuild. Its only my toy for the weekend.

Oh, and any veiws of Comma oil?

Please advise as already draining the oil, Cheers

Ok,

If it is just for topping up then any semi synthetic 10w-40 off the shelf will be fine, should you do an oil change we would recomend a 5w-40 full synthetic as the quality option.

Cheers
