I have an 88 Evo11.

I was getting low on juice and was out of my locality so stopped at the first station which was a BP. I put in £20 of Ultimate unleaded at 89.9 litre!

I have asked about the octane of this stuff at BP stations before and was assured it was 99 by one manager in Bedford, but have stuck with only Optimax.

On the pump it had 97.

I have never had such poor economy. So far after 160km it's averaging 10.8 litres/100 km's, mostly done on A roads.

With Optimax I usually get between 8.4 to 9.2litres/100km over a tank.

I am never putting that stuff in again.

Anyone else got experiences of this stuff.

Kevin

Yeah, me too average around 26mpg on optimax around 31mpg, go figure?

I've only been using it as it's local.

Used it once at Lavendon and never again-it is apparently 97 not 99 and I got a better responce from a £5 worth of standard when in dire straits.

Interesting..

I use Ultimate all the time in my E30 M3, never had a problem and even found I had better economy and it smelt amazing after a good run. Just like petrol used to smell like.

It must be something to do with how the ECU is setup i reckon, and what you normally fill the tank with.

Pikey,

When I search on Cheltenham - nothing found,
when I search on Gloucestershire, no Cheltenham found,

funny, could have sworn there was a BP station on the Twekesbury Road opposite Cotswold BMW!?

(p.s. when you hit the link - it banners up with an ad for BP DIESEL!!) - Aggghhhhhhhhhh

Oh yes! p.p.s - I agree with Pikey - my M3 was so so better on Ultimate, more responsive, etc, etc

- kpl (mpg?) - who cares!

I've tried Optima, and thought it was v v good, then tried Ultimate, and although it's meant to be a lower RON, the old M3 seemed to be better on it - strange eh?

BP Ultimate in an Alpina B10 Biturbo -- usually run only Optimax but tried Ultimate once when low on fuel on the M4.

never again -- poor response on acceleration. poor fuel economy.

but -- happily -- no early detonation.

I diluted the stuff asap with Optimax, and noticed the improvement immediately.  maybe an M3 has a different Octane requirement....

The Evo11 I have is supposed to run on 98Ron and is set up on the appropriate map for it.

Do these things have knock sensors like on a Jap Impreza I had? If you put regular 95 juice in that the management would overfuel it to cool things down to prevent detonation (pinking).

Perhaps my Evo11 engine is doing similar. It has higher compression than regular M3's.

They do a BP Ultimate diesel aswell. Who knows why?

There are, in fact, two BP ultimate fuel station in Cheltenham. One is down the Tewkesbury road opposite Cotswold Bmw like thepits said, and the other is on the way out to Andoversford on the London Road.

I think their website needs updating somehow!

Just wondering how much it is in other parts of the country? It's 88p/litre here atm, although no doubt that will change soon.

I used to run my old 320 Coupe on the Ultimate, and also Shell super every now and again and could have sworn I can fel the performance increase. (Could be the placebo effect!! )

If you read the BMW owners handbook it tells you that the performance figures for your car have been quoted using the higher octone fuels, such as Super and Ultimate!! and if you use the lower/cheaper fuels the performance will be less!!!

I thought they were just cleaner burning fuels that gave better performance anyway!!  never once thought I would get better fuel economy!
