Not sure it was quite what they meant though really...usually helicopters don't drop off the back of a ship....heard of things dropping off the back of a lorry, but never a helicopter doing aerobatics off a ship

Possibly might be a very bad day at the office.....

Was chatting to a neighbour this morning.  He told me a story that is both funny and embarrassing to those involved.  Probably at least one P45 in the mail too.

Last week the M.V. Patricia was out and about doing a spot of buoy setting and a helicopter was taking supplies to the ship.  Anyway after a very busy morning, the pilot and crewman decided it was time for a bite to eat, so they promptly landed back on the helipad aboard the ship, turned everything off and duly went into the crew quarters for their well earned lunch.

While they were relaxing and eating, the ship had to alter its position according to the prevailing winds.  Nothing unusual for the ship and no-one anticipated anything to happen.....

Ship moved, helicopter fell off the helideck backwards into the sea.  Once this minor problem had been noticed by the crew on the bridge, a call was put out for the pilot and crew, cos at that point no-one knew if they had been in the helicopter when it fell off.  Pilot and crewmember were compltely oblivious of what had happened outside and were busy eating their dinner when the Captain of the ship flew in through the door and announced the helicopter was in the sea and why had it not been lashed down as per normal procedure.

The Patricia has solid teak decks, including the helideck and had been covered with plastic matting and had therefore covered up all the lashdown points.  No-one had told the pilot that the ship was about to shift position, so when she did move, the helicopter slid gently off the deck and into the sea below.

Oh how I would have liked to have been a fly on the wall when they contacted the helicopter owners and informed them that their aircraft had 'slipped off the deck and into the sea'.

Severely kicked backsides all round and now they have to recover the helicopter too...definately NOT a good day at the office
