Hi All six owners.

As some of you may be aware i recently fitted an 850 brake conversion on my car. Well the other day i aquired some genuine fully refurbished Alpina's on a 16" with the correct period black centres. All excited i began to fit them, being told that everything would fit. Disaster struck. They fitted untill i did the wheel bolts up which then caused the caliper to touch the wheel.

Now i have decided to revert back to original in order to get the wheels on and i am doing this for two reasons. One the genuine Alpinas look so good and two i am not happy with my new brakes. Ok when you stamp on them they hurt you, but around town they have no feeling and a large amount of pedal movement is required in order for them to operate. This is despite uprating the master cylinder to 750 spec. This is no good for me as i spend the majority of time driving around town.

So as the title suggests trumph and disaster are there in spades for all to see.

Now i have to consider changing or uprating the current discs and pads and also selling my rather large investment into these brakes.

Sorry to hear that, BUT--why didnt you Fit 17" Rims to allow for those calipers, or do the 8 series run on 16"??.I wanted to fit an AP setup with My 16" Alpina Rims, But -AP said Not poss, calipers Will Foul rims , Unless you get a Purpose made bracket to allow clearance.

The calipers are supposed to fit inside 840/850 16" rims, but they don't fit inside a 7X16" Alpina rim. They touch the rim and the spokes as they protrude about 50mm more than a single pot. I only need about 2mm more room, but i don't want to use spacers and i am not happy with the brakes so will revert back to standard however i will use uprated discs and pads subject to what Barny at ML recomends. I thin the calipers require an 8 or wider combinations to truly fit. I have 17" Alpina replicas at the moment, but the 16 will look better and more period.

You know, one of these days we must sit down and work out how many parts you've accumulated, and how much you've spent on your car to date.

By my reckoning, I think you've spent more than me, and I thought I'd spent a lot....

...and, by the way, mentioning "poor Ross" doesn't count!

Bad news: it's being parted out by FAB Direct. Chances are they've sold the vital bits already....!

James, if you are still interested in uprating your brakes, try Hi Spec.

The bloke down there will go through everything before they make them for you. I am going to get a set of Monster 4-pots made up when I get my car back on the road. DawieM3 has a set of Moster 6's on his M3 Racer, and we were outbraking a 996 Porsche @ Brands!

Even as a passenger, I was really impressed with the braking, granted it was a racer, but it still was impressive!

On a personal note, if you use the car for road use, then I would run spacers. Get the decent Eibach ones, Bexley Motor Works have more info on those, they are very good.

-yeah, spacers has to be the way to go, if you just need 2mm. I am surprised about the spongeyness with your setup, is it possible you need more bleedin' bleeding?

Well to fill you in on recent developments i had a long chat with Barney at Munich legends and they feel they can achieve two things. Firstly they can get the 850 brake set up working how i would like it to and secondly they will space and tune up things so the wheels will fit. I have agreed to leave them my car whilst i go away on holiday and they will fidle with it over a week and have it all working as it should.

I will write them a blank cheque and hope it's not to exspensive to get things sorted out. Will probable end up with stainless hoses, spacers and new master cylinder seals. I can't wait and don't car now as i want things fixed and up and running. I have not had my car for about two weeks now and thats long enough.

1 = Have a good Holiday

2 = don't look at the Bank statement until you have driven your pride and joy after ML have worked magic on it.

You might be well-advised to instruct a Solicitor specialising in personal bankruptcy, just in case....

We don't want to be losing that lovely fitted kitchen so soon after installing it, now, do we???
