2002 bmw 520

If I drive for a while, maybe 30-40 minutes, engine starts shuddering is the best way I can put it.   I wait til I hit a set of lights or pull over,  restart, and it fixes it.

The yellow engine light has been on for last couple of months, dont know if its related, in last service,  mechanic said he couldnt  find anything wrong but as engine light could be one of many things but as long as its driving ok, it should be fine but this engine shuddering thing only started recently.   He said he'd spend a bit more time looking at it next time but money involved strpping engine down and as car is so old he said to take a bit of time to think about it.  (I do trust him)

Any ideas?

Sounds like engine exhaust gas recirculating fault. Blow by gasses get drawn into the inlet manifold to get burnt in the cylinders again but it sounds like you may have a fault in the system or it us blocked. I'm assuming it is an E39 and therefore petrol?

Get the codes read, might be a fuel or air mixture issue also.  Might be worth cleaning out the idle control valve.
