its more likely to be thermostat, i had same problem, and you'll get the part off Toby at BM MINI PARTS, cant remember the price he gave me, but it was very reasonable, and i ended up not getting from him, as i had to have an engine replacement a couple of weeks ago, and had the part bought from BMW by the garage who did the work, ( who i highly recommend ).....
you will get toby's contact details from the forum Edited by jimbo/e36 - 05-December-2012 at 00:10 |

If it were a dodgy thermostat you would be able to tell by looking at the temp gauge. At this time of year, your engine would never get to the normal temp with the heater valves at full heat and a jammed open stat. What's your temp gauge looking like? If the needle doesn't get to the vertical and stays on the cold side of normal then the stat is goosed, i.e. failed open so the engine never heats up and you are trying to coax heat out of the heater, engine won't stand a chance of getting to temp.
A new stat is an easy job on an E39 after you have got the left hand thread viscous fan off the water pump. Read page 2 of this thread. If the temp gauge is normal in operation it could be stuck (closed) electric heater valves. These are located on the inside of the nearside wing under the inlet manifold. Give these a tap with the wooden end of a hammer or something to see if that can persuade them to work. Or it could be an almighty air lock in the cooling system. The link above will tell you how to fill the system to avoid getting air locks in it. HTH Andrew
