Hi all,
New on here and to BMW, bought a 318i on an 02 plate which i think is an E46?, thing is it says it is 1995 cc on V5? i thought 318 meant 3 series 1.8 no?, also i see reference to engines as M42 so can anyone confirm mine as this pls?. Love the car, 77k 4 door saloon in black for £2700 which i found ok, only thing is it was parked up 8 weeks before i got it, fuel pump relay went, had that changed then ran sh*te below 2k, usally ok but can stutter - cut out?. read about these cam sensors so anyone think worth getting them checked , was thinking of trying baymow stockport as very close to them Cheers |

Hi and welcome to the forum.Yes you are correct, you have an E46 chassis. The numbers on the back end of BMW's nowadays are a guide as to what size of engine is in them. Like your 318 is really a de-tuned 2 litre engine (1995cc), I think you get a 316 which is also a 1995cc engine but de-tuned a bit more. My E39 523 was actually a 2.5 litre engine tuned down a bit for the German insurance market giving what BMW deamed the performance from a 2.3 litre engine. From what I can see your engine will be a N42 unit.
Make sure you get a reliable garage to do a diagnostic check on the car before spending any money on swaping out sensors.
