Hi People sorry my first post and im asking questions already......Truth is i only found this forum looking for answers to this question on the net and found this great place.......so think i'll stick around if you dont mind.
I need a little help with this i bought a genuine westfalia car specific towbar wiring harness around 6 months ago went to fit it yesterday and its the pre 2000 harness they have sent me my car is a 2002 525d saloon and the most significant diffrence is the rear light plugs are completely diffrent.
My question is can i simply cut out the plugs and solder them to my exsisting wiring ? once i find out which wire is for which..........just concerned it will mess up my cars electronics system .
I have taken some pictures the kit is the 13 pin euro plug kit and you can see the 8 pin tail light sockets that come with the kit

And this is the tail light plug on my own car 6 pin

Any help much apreciated many thanks guys Smile

Hi and welcome to the forum.

I can't see your pictures as my work IT system doesn't let me but I understand the problems.

The early E39s had a signle connection to the back of the rear light cluster to the looms, the facelift E39s have multiple connections to the loom.

Have a look here for some towbar wiring help.

I would call Westfalia and explain you have the wrong loom and see if they can swap it for you.

You should be able to easily adapt the Westfalia loom to fit the car and connect to the correct wires.  You can link into the car loom using scotch blocks or solder extra lengths of wire to the Westfalia loom.

As long the signals from the car loom get to the Westfalia loom it should not interfere with the cars electrics.  The Westfalia loom has an in built bypas relay which is required so the cars system is not upset.

My link above will give you some other links to read up on the theory behind the towbar wiring.

I fitted a 7 pin socket to my my E60, then went back a year later and changed it to a 13 pin socket and wired in an addional power relay (ignition on dependant) for providing the 12v supply to a caravan.

If you need anything else just ask.

Andrew thanks for your reply

I Have ordered off ebay two pre 2000 rear light buld holders and the guy is going to give me the plugs with them im hoping i can simply use them and that way i may only need to modify my lights plugs and not the harness.

The kit cost me £65 from towsure 6 months ago and if i sell it and buy the correct one im going to be out around £150+ and the only difference i can see is the rear light plugs

I have read up on this and the module is the one supplied to all five series e39 cars with parktronic whatever that is lol heres a list below of the cars that module covers incase anyone needs to know

I will give it a go after reading your threads and i will post up if i am sucessfull that way folk will Know that the pre 2000 kit will aslo fit the 2000>on with a little mod

Thanks again for your help Tom
