I'm contemplating buying a 1999 E38 728i.
When checking cars what should I look out for? Are there any particular weak spots, troublesome issues or costly fixes waiting for me?

Any hints and tips from current owners would be very helpful.

Front suspension wears so if the car is a sport, the dampers are not cheap, same for front bushes (listen for clunks) as the bushes can perish so keep an eye out for any shakes through the steering, rear bushes start to perish which give some awkward handling traits. Engine is a tough old lump though and very good in the e38 as is the gearbox.
Mainly electrical, as there are a lot of toys on board the e38.
History, see how its been looked after.

Thank you so much for a well written, easy to understand article on this. It can get really confusing when trying to explain it – but you did a great job. Thank you!
