e36 compact noise from v belt

   hiya all my 2000 e36 318 tds compact has a noise problem
the noise is there for 2 seconds after starting the engine then stops completely.  then it gradually comes back as the engine is warming up.
after replacing the belt tensioner pulley and listening round through a stephoscope (!?!) i think it is this area thats making the noise ( see link) its the main pulley from the crankshaft area see pic !!

it seems to be  a sort of grating noise like a dry bearing ?!?!? any pointers to the problem would be great. 
also if you go www.exist.ru there is complete online parts diagrams for nearly every car made its in russian so you will have to go to alta vista to translate it from russian to english
