Hey All, Sorry to bother you all, but I just got my '54 E46 320cd M-Sport (123Kmls) serviced by (BMW Dealer) today. I mentioned to the mechanic today when I was handing it in that, I have been noticing that the car has been lacking in/not producing full power in all gears from about 2,000rpm as when you put the foot down & the rev hit approx 2,000/2,250rpm & the revs/power stops/slows down dramatically & it takes ages for the full power/turbo to kick in (if it does at all) as you can feel it holding back! The only way I have noticed to help with this is when it happens to release the accelerator fully & then to press it fully again & this seems to work most of the time!?!? So the mechanic told me he would run the diagnostics on it & see what would show up & this is what he said. "the diagnostics shows that it is the 'Inlet-Manifold & Glow- Plugs' & I need to change them all especially the Inlet- Manifold ASAP (Total cost of €1,000) before it damages the engine. Is this possible??? Would removing the manifold & cleaning it just work??? or is there any chance it could be these VERY FAMOUS "Swirl- Flaps" that's causing this problem??? Also, I don't see how the 'Glow-Plugs' could cause this as there has never been a problem starting the car, even in very cold weather like this winter & the mpg is still around 45/50mpg! But if ye do think the Manifold at least needs to be replaced! Does anyone know where I can buy 1 & have a BMW Specialist in Ireland to replace it at a much better price than I was quoted!?!? All information/Guidance will be very much appreciated. Thank you all very much in advance for your help in relation to this. Regards, MJ |

1. Remove 'Swirl Flaps' - you do not need to renew manifold. Some dealers are now doing this, if not, then a good Indy is what you want. This is urgent.
2. Glow plugs cause smooth running issue when cold NOT power issue (but should be done with #1 as manifold must be removed to fit) 3. Get it diagnosed properly for power issue - can be many things - but highly, highly unlikely that you were given correct diagnosis. You were given a 'code read' - NOT a proper diagnostic! Kind Regards, E. |

Swirl flaps are the DIEsel achilies heel. Get them removed before they write off the engine. Also try cleaning out the inlet manifold. Have a read here. Edited by Andrew Rolland |

Yep, sounds like swirl flaps (tho I don't know that engine).
The good news is they're actually quite cheap to blank off, just a fair amount of labour, and you shouldn't need to replace anything else, so don't despair! It is urgent tho - if they're sticking then I guess they might break off, and that really would bin your entire engine. |
