    Posted: 01-February-2011 at 13:20

The time has come for my E60 after 60,000+ miles for it to want a new set of spark plugs.  The plugs in it have been in since day 1.

I'll buy the parts from BMW and fit them myself but it's been a while since I have changed spark plugs.

I'm slightly nervous about doing it myself as the spark plugs are so deep in the cylinder heads that I struggle to get the new plugs threaded properly in their holes.  It's a long way down to manipulate a spark plug at the end of an extension bar.

Any thoughts or tips?

Andrew

Hi Andrew, it's been a long time since I fitted spark plugs too! An old trick, that worked very well for me, was to push a piece of garden hose over the top of the spark plug. (A piece about 6-8 in long, or so). This allows it to be threaded. It also protects you against cross-threading -- the hose will slip off the plug, prompting you to retrieve it & start again.
All the best,
ThosH

Thanks, I've heard of that hose trick.

How do you then retrieve a plug that is now lying not quite parallel to the bore all the way down?  Couple of bits of very clean wire?

Hi Andrew, to retrieve plug which is not sitting right --- I'd use a little gadget that has a retractable claw grip. I'm sure you have seen them ...... a flexible outer casing, with an inner rod which has 3 no. retractable claws. It has a push-button at the handle end, which extends the claws. Release the button & the claws grasp the item in question. Retrieves a screw/nut/bolt that has fallen into an inaccessible place, etc ..... has saved my bacon many times ..... I'm sure you probably have one yourself.
When I mentioned the hosepipe saving you from cross-threading .... it's unlikely that it will have actually engaged in the threads at all; likely to be lying against the bore, as you said. This little gadget should pick it up very easily & you can start again with the hosepipe.
All the best,

ThosH

That's great thanks.  I know the pick up tool you mean, t'is about the only tool I don't have in my tool box.
