With the cold spell and the fact that my car is now approaching 7 years old, I am toying with the idea of replacing the original battery. Looking here they state that I need to register the new battery somehow into the cars electronic system. From realoem.com Please observe without fail the When had to disconnect the battery in my first E60 I had no issues, I just re-connected it and everything worked. How can the cars electrical system possibly tell that a new battery has been installed rather than the existing one just reconnected? I mean 12 volts is 12 volts. Batteries do not have any circutry in them which operrate or require a coding in them to make them work unlike control units etc. I haven't checked TIS, can anyone make any suggestions if I have to do this? Thanks Andrew |

Just checked TIS and I'm not quite 100% sure that I don't need to do anything. From what I could figure out, programming would be required if I was to replace the battery with one of a different capacity. That bit makes sense, if the alternator is told how much charge it has to produce via its control unit. A 70Amp hour battery would put far less strain on the system in terms of charging compared to the standard 110Amp hour battery that is fitted. The bit on how to refit the battery in TIS just described the order how to do things and provided torque settings, it mentioned nothing about reprogramming. Any thoughts? |

Meant to reply to this topic before now, sorry for delay.
Both queries related to changing battery after 6 or 7 years. I'm surprised & wonder what tests have been done on battery condition or if something is not draining the battery or if charging rate is OK. My 2000 520i had original battery when I changed last Feb to current 02 520D. Never any problems -- even in worst cold spell seen in Ireland for many years. One issue that I did have was with a Garmin Sat Nav -- left it charging, while car was stopped. After a few hours, car battery was flat & had to be jump started. In fairness, could be dodgy Garmin. Any Service messages? My car has a service message alerting you to excessive battery discharge (ref earlier posting ...... turned out to be faulty caravan 12S relay.) Main dealer explained at time that battery voltage sensor is very sensitive. They look out for loss of date/time display when checking batteries. Evidently, system closes down least essential loads, to preserve battery charge level. Maybe I had a particularly good battery in the 520i. Our Yaris is also 00, and original battery still going strong. I put in on overnight charge recently and found that it started at 3A and reduced to zero ....... I had never seen that happening before. Touch wood it stays like that for another while! ThosH |

There is nothing wrong with my battery that I'm aware off, just more like preventative maintenance. I just don't want to get stuck with a flat battery. If I can replace it before it goes..is my line of thought at the moment. But then someone will remind me of my old signature "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" |

Hi Andrew, I changed the battery in my 545 with no dramas. However, comma,I have cunning plan. With your new battery ready to install, put a set of jump leads from the car's terminals to an external battery. Disconnect and remove the car battery and fit the new one. Re-connect the terminals and disconnect the leads. The car won't know anything has happened. The only thing I would do for sure is make sure you have the same MaHr rating, anything smaller could fry. Good luck, Merry Krimbles!

Thanks Ken. I know about putting a smaller amphr battery would not be a good thing. It would certainly struggle to turn over the engine at minus 9.5! Too big and the alternator would fry trying to charge the thing. |

So long you change to a battery with the same capacity, specifications its no problem at all. But if you change to a battery with differnet amp/h you must program the IBS system fore the the new capacity. The ibs could automatic close some electric system off, if the batterycapacity goes under a specified capacity and if its wrong programed it proberly dont closed down system at the right level. Its possibel to use BMW/Inpa Eidabas diagnos to program in a new battery. |

reserrecting an old thread here - thought it better than creating a new one duplicating...
anyway, the past few days I have been losing the time and getting an alert " Increased battery discharge while stationary" still the same after few trips to edinburgh that would have more than charged the battery.... Some research points possibly to the IBS cable or something not powering off correctly. So last night i removed any cds, unplugged aux cable, turned off fan etc, forgot to lock the car too! This morning time is ok and does not need set, and no new alerts. Not sure where this leaves me - still potentially needing a new battery £££ or something else needing £££ attention???? |

Problem solved ( I hope!) - local specialist thought first step would be to replace battery with a new one. no mention of IBS or new battery needing coded/reset/whatever to the car... so prepared for £100 lighting of the wallet. However, i noticed that when the car was locked, the light on the window-lock button was still lit. I also noticed the button was sticking and not switching on/off as it should. some WD40 and wee clean had the window-lock working as it should. also noticed that next day - no battery discharge errors and thats been nearly about 4 or 5days now without error - fingers crossed! |

So it was a switch no properly powering off then, rather than a dud battery of iffy IBS?

yep. so far so good since I cleaned up the switch. it must have been stuck on slow draining current.
I've not had any errors since. |

I have the same battery warning message.
As far as I could find out, you can just take old battery out and fit new one without telling the car. Only difference will be that the charging "policy" will still be for an old battery which can wear the new battery more (more aggressive cahrging patterns for older battery to desulphate) Only thing you need to watch out is the coulour of the battery. there are white ones and black ones. Need to be replaced like for like. again, as far as I could find out, white ones are normal lead acid and black ones are carbon matted or gel or whatever to supply the more powerhungry bigger engines and stuff of the larger 5's. Like M5 etc. |

No messing with batteries, straight to dealer for a genuine one, they tend to be priced o.k. from dealer too.

any news on this? How much was it in the end?
I am looking around for a battery and found from £89 (GSF) to £119 (Bosch or Varta) and AGM battery would be £195! My Indi can reset the battery thing with his autologic box. |

Having recently read the Haynes Book of Paradies that is loosly based on the E60 chassis, they mention that a new battery needs to be 'registered' to the car on installation. A new battery albiet of the same correct Amp hour size will have a different charge/discharge cycle than the one it is replacing and sadly I can beleive the cars brain will be clever to detect the difference in charging rates etc.
Aww boo.... Although, Ken says his went o.k. after a change. Mibbie the trick would be to change the battery before it deteriorates thus the system won't notice a change.

well, I had to act because I am abroad for work and didn't fancy to get into trouble with a discharged battery.
My car wasn't cranking as swiftly as one would expect and the battery only showed 12.6 Volt even after a long drive and the clock settings got lost once or twice again. Bought a new battery but couldn't get the exact size of the BMW battery. Oddly it's a 80Ah Battery and everything aftermarket seems to be 88AH. I could have had the correct one but as mentioned was running out of time. Fitted new battery and cranking has improved. Not registered battery yet but will do as soon as I get round to pop round my Indy. |
