It would appear that BMWs with V8 and V12 engines built between July 2001 and November 2009 are being recalled due to potential brake problems associated with loss of vacuum. So that's mine potentially! If the other V8s and the V12s are like mine, these engines have a seperate pump fitted to the front of one of the V banks to provide the vacuum source for the brakes. Where did you find that K? When I looked on the BMW website (.co.uk.) there was nothing listed. |

I heard on the news about the Rolls-Royce recall but there was no mention of the BMW issues.
I imagine you will get a letter Andrew as they usually use DVLA records to find current owners. At least it's being acted upon rather than brushed under the carpet! Mike |

Well I got the letter this morning to say that I'm affected and I am to contact my preffered dealer (thank gawd they weren't going to force one on me) to arrange the work. They are going to replace a hose, (I'm guessing parts 5 and 6) and then check the vacuum pump out for oil contamination. Andrew |

Booked in to my preferred dealer next week (with a do not wash instruction) for the work. 1 to 1.5 hours required to check it over and if parts are needed another 1 to 1.5 hours to fit. The rather helpful girl said that it would all be charged to BMW GB and not me! |

All sorted and the beast has been given a clean bill of health. It went to Fairbairns this morning, I spoke to Tom Church (usual helpful chap) who explained that they would check for oil contamination in the pipe between the vacuum pump and the servo for oil and what they would replaced if oil was found. Tom said mine was clear, so they only replaced the vacuum pipe. Was completed within about 90 mins. If oil was found a new brake servo would be required! Ouch that would cost! |

Hmm, it's now leaking oil from where the vacuum hose leaves the vacuum pump, phoned the dealer, off to see them shortly. It was fine till they touched it, now it's leaking oil. I don't know if it's simply a hose clip that needs tightened or they have over tightened it (as the hose is bellowed above the jubilee clip) cut the hose and it's leaking out. I'm of the opinion it's either a new part at fault or a unfortunatnley poor workmanship, meaning, I'm not expecting a bill! |

Fairbairns checked it out. They took the hose off the pump and checked inside and no oil was found. They cleaned up the area around the pump to pipe joint and I will need to monitor it. I had wiped a tiny amount off just around the bottom of the hose to see if any more would leak out in the 20 miles or so to the dealer. None did leak out. They didn't charge me anything which was good. Fine and dry back home. I don't know if there is an oil breather somewhere which would deposit oil on that particular area of the engine bay? |
