E36.

A lot easier to find a decent car and it will be newer so more reliable. Also while the E36 is far from perfect they don't rot like the E30. Far more chance of getting a car with a few creature comforts as well.

Good luck insuring it though. Has he got a few prices yet because it may well be extortionate.

If it were for me it'd be the E30.
For an 19 year old lad though the E36 will hold more street cred.
£2500 will buy an A1 condition E36 version and there will be loads
more to pick from.
E36 are pretty reliable and easy to work on with spare parts 10 a
penny and cheap enough from ECP etc.

Why not give him a shot of your E30 318 first and see if he likes it

My oldest will be in the market for his very first car soon.

He definatley wants a 318is, but which one. An E30 or E36.

Now I know quite a bit about the E30's but nothing on the E36.

Now bearing in mind it will be his first car and he is only 19, so insurance will be high no matter what car. This is purely down to running costs and reliablity.

I rekon he will have about £2500 to spend on the car
