Hi All,

I am currently a proud owner of an Alfa Romeo 147 ( I know I'm going to get some stick for that), but I've decided it is finally time to go for something with a bit more class. I'm off to my local BMW dealer this weekend to order a new 1 Series.

My question is, which engine would you suggest? I want something quick so my first thoughts were to go for the M-Sport model, but my mate keeps telling me to go for the 120d model.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks

130i is the only one if you can still get it.

Don't buy new as you are just paying a premium that will fade 2 mins after you drive it out of the showroom, unless of course you are going to keep it for 10 years.

Don't get a diesel unless you do starship mileage a year.  You will not get the benifits of the fuel economy unless you do big miles.  Diesels cost more to buy, more to service, they are noisey and dynamically dull to drive plus the smoke and smell is never good.

There is not much room in the back for passengers, they drive really well for the class its in, but a VW Golf will do everything else better and for less ££££s.

For the money you are going to spend on new 1er you could buy a lot more second hand i.e. a big engined 3 or 5.

Be exclusive and drive a Petrol 5 Series!

If you are looking for lots of torque with good mpg then diesel is the way to go.

Plus on the 116, 118 and 120 they are all 2 litre diesels and you pay only £30 a year road tax.

This is on the newer models, 09 onwards I think. Mine certainly is but I have seen an 07 plate diesel with a dic for £155pa.

The 1er is a similar size to the old E30 3 series (that's why I have one) and rear leg room is limited.

Servicing is approx 19,000 miles or every 2 years.

The other point to note is the proper end is powering the car unlike the Alfa and the majority of other vehicles.

OK. Another idea:

I have test driven the new F20 116i and was really impressed. The thing DOES go!
The engine is just 1.6lt turbo
If you want more power and responsive acceleration, you can get the 118i. This is still 1.6lt turbo again with more bhp, 170 to be accurate. Just test drive it and you will see what I mean.

Diesels are worth only if you do a lot of miles, say over 40000 per year
