I had my water pump replaced about 4 years ago so cant really remember, but i think the car was overheating and making some noise. The fan should run when the engine is going so you probable have an ok Viscous fan coupling.

If you shut the car off as soon as it went into the red and did not allow it to run in the red then your head should be fine as they are pretty tough, but there are no guarantees.

As a friend of mine once said owning an old BMW is a Labour of love.

Sohlman,

Hi, I picked up your reply in the coupe section, many thanks.

I guess I should keep the topic in this thread to be correct. Not going to look at it now until the holidays are over, are new water pumps expensive?

When the engine is on the cooling fan is turning, is that correct?

What were the symptons which prompted the replacement of your water pump?

I do hope that the gasket and head are ok. Cars eh? you gotta love em eh?

Hi Big Vern,

Message posted in coupe section.

Had my water pump changed by a friend who is a profetional mechanic and i think it took him about 2 hours, but don't quote me on that. + he works pretty slowly as we are always chatting.

Hi,

My 83, 635 has just developed an overheating problem and I suspect a duff water pump.

If anything it had previously been running a little cool and under the halfway mark on the temp gauge. It kept making an occasional squealing noise, similar to a slipping fan belt.

Last night I noticed that the gauge started to climb and climb and climb. I obviously knocked the engine off.

I dont think the gauge is defective as I pulled the bonnet and the overflow on the expansion tank was doing its job!

Would anyone concur with my suspicions that its the water pump which has given up?

Mileage on car is 130k.

Is it a hard job on the M30 engine?
