i dont think the thermostat is gone if it were the temp needle would not stay at half way and the heat wouldnt be speed related. eg no heat below 50 mph try the bleeding method as mentioned above also drive the car until hot then rev the car to 3000 3500 rpm for a min and see if the heat comes then if this is the case maybe u have a faulty water pump

Yip classic symptoms of a thermostat that has failed open.

You won't damage the car driving it in that condition, but your toes may fall off.

A new 'stat is about £10.  You will need to take the viscous fan off to get to the bolts that hold the 'stat cover on.

Probably a faulty thermostat (but could be a blocked rad).  Check the various pipes feeding in and out of the rad to see if any are cold.

One simple thing though, when bleeding the system, did you have the heater turned up to the last?  If not, try bleeding again with the engine hot and heating valves open.

Hey lads,
Bout 2-3 weeks ago my E36 323i decided it didnt
want to blow out hot air while the car was
stationary, nothing weird there so I topped up the coolant
and bled the air through the valve on top of the rad which
always worked before. But no matter how many times I do
this now the heater wont heat until I reach 50 MPH and when
I drop below 50 it goes cold again. The temp gauge readout
never goes past half-way so the car never over-heats even
slightly. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!
