Hi all, Can anyone clarify exactly which E30 M3's had a dog leg gearbox and which didn't. I have recently bought a 1988 USA spec non evo which has a standard shift pattern. I am led to believe that USA versions had an overdrive 5th gear and this could be a contributing factor (different box) although I have seen ECE vehicles with standard shift patterns also. Regards, Andy. |

Only the US spec cars had the non dogleg box . All Euro cars will have the proper dogleg box . Look here Click me

Any idea why this was ? Emissions perhaps with regards to the overdrive - but why change the pattern ? Perhaps the US box was used in other vehicles, I shall have to check EPC. Thanks.

Did a bit of checking up on EPC and found that there are two types of gearboxes listed for E30 M3 - A Sport gearbox and an Overdrive gearbox, with three variations on each. The third variant of the Sport and Overdrive gearbox's is listed as being installed on many other older non M Power BM's such as E12,s E28's and E23's. As none of these vehicles had a dog leg box I concluded that a standard shift pattern Sport gearbox has at sometime been used on the E30 M3. The first two variants of gearbox listed are only applicable to E30 M3 models and can only be dog leg but this third variant is a std pattern. Andy. |
