As for remaps on pretty much standard naturally aspirated motors, I wpuldn't waste my money. I doubt you would get 11bhp as many of the claims made are questionable.

My suggestion would be to leave it standard for a couple of years, save your money and then buy a bigger engined 3 series. A 330 has 231 bhp and will be massively faster and much more satisfying than any modifed 316 could ever be unless you stick a turbo on it which will cost big £.

In fact any of the 6 cylinder 3 series will offer a big step up in performance over your 316. You can pick up a decent E46 323 these days for under 3k and with 170 bhp on tap it will fly compared to a 316.

second that. Most sensible advise.

even if they don't physically have to change the chip in your ECU, it could still be "chipped"

Differences:

"chipping" a car is 9 out of 10 a change of the engine programming with a prewritten chip, meaning that there is NO individual mapping. One size fits all. Expected gains are minimal (unless the original programming was very bad or restrictive for other reasons)
On older cars the chip itself had to be changed because they are ROM chips only and couldn't be erased/overwritten. Newer cars have erasable chips and can just be overwritten with a laptop plugged into the service port

"live" mapping a car means that your car will be strapped on a Dyno and the engine program will be rewritten based on the measurements taken from YOUR engine. This method yields the best results (espcially if other stuff was changed i.e. exhaust/intake/cams)

316i SE saloon 1.9 petrol 140 bhp standard

I have 19" alloys with TOYO proxy tyres comming on Monday, I have lowering springs 40mm( still to be fitted), I have a strut brace (fitted), And a carbon Fibre VIS pipercross Induction Kit (fitted).

I will get an exhaust shortly, with possible manifild upgrade, also fancy getting it remapped. Any other ideas?

All depends on what you have now. What model car do you have and what output is it?

Others on here should be able to guide you from experience once they know what you have to play with.

Hmm, is it a chip or a remap? If it's the latter I'd get the exhaust first.
For 11bhp though I wouldn't bother.
My 318ti is chipped though it didn't cost me much and it did smooth out the flat spot on my auto. I can't really see any performance difference to be honest.

Suppose it depends on the model, usual way to go is to get the exhaust done as well. I expect some one on here will have heard of them and can give some advice.

Hey guys, I just got a price to get my car chipped, £279, It bothers me that it is not from a BMW specialist. It seems a good price as i would like it to be a bit more responsive. This will increase it by 11 bhp and 17NM of torque, They seem to have a good record of doing high performance cars(SEDITAS in Prestwick Ayrshire), ANY ADVICE??

BTW i have already fitted a VIS pipercross Carbon Fibre Induction Kit. Do you think that getting it chipped would be worth while??
