Topic: MOT Posted: 05-December-2003 at 15:28 |
Hi,
From peoples experience, is it preferable to get an MOT carried out at a BMW dealer or will the local MOT testers do?
Thanks

My experience at a dealer wasn't great... they farmed it out to a 3rd party anyway. Go local and get any major rectification done at a dealer to maintain ur warranty (if you have one).

I always use an independant after I got the dealer to do it and the stamp on the certificate was the inde down the road.

At least you guys in the UK have a choice. The Irish equivalent, the NCT, is conducted by a private company which has the monopoly on all testing.

I think some states have emissions tests, but you could live with that I guess.

Get some some back street cowboys to do it for you, bung them a tenner and jobs a good one! Or better still get yourself a computer scanner and printer and forge your own! save yourself ten pounds and the test fee. Or think about it this way, what does that little bit of paper really mean? ROADWORTHY ON THE DAY OF TESTING. What happens the day after it passes and your brakes fail? its not just someones verdict of your car. Look after it and I might think about letting you give my kids a lift to the shops. Sorry for being sarcastic. I thought there was a government standard for the mot? or am I being naive?

as one MOT tester said to me....."the certificate is only really vaild while your car is at the MOT satation as you can drive your car out onto the road and straight away your brake light breaks". Anyway, the fine for no MOT is only Ł25 makes you wonder if its worth the hassle of getting one at all :D

Why do we want an MoT? Have a walk down a street near you and look at the tyres on the cars, in my experience ( a Londoner i'll admit ) at least one in ten has a bald one. If tyres (cheap!!!!) aren't right then what else isn't? I know a few MoT stations that would give me a certificate, but only one where I know the guy has really looked at my car. I know most of us are enthusiasts so we keep our cars safe but what about the rest? Maybe that Irish way is better? I think the German way is. Last F****r to drive into my car couldn't have got an MoT in a month of sundays!

Strong feelings here I think, oh yeah sorry to change the subject slightly but has anyone noticed how many cars have an expired tax disc recently? one car regularly does the school run at my daughters school with a disc out of date. Disc out of date-no insurance!-child knocked over-police involved-Hmmmm. Alternative?-public transport

On the flip side, who would want their car tested by a garage who didn't actually look at it at all,and just wrote a ticket out? Yes, it would save a lot of grief,BUT..what if something was wrong, say, brakelines?
I know we all look after our cars as best we can, but it's the bits we rely on the people who do the services, repairs and MOTs who REALLY look at them,to tell us that they are safe to carry our families and freinds about.
I would personally prefer to have a very thorough examiner who would only give a ticket outif he was satisfied. Not these idiots who just make up reasons for a failure to make more money off you. Headlamp aim out of alinment, when it's passed for the last 3 years at the same place without bieng touched?

Im affaid you r wrong on on no tax disc means no insurance. My brother was involved in an accident (not his fault (his car was on finance)) He had NO MOT OR VALID TAX DISC. He thought he was in sh*t until the police told him that the insurance companies will still pay out. He was right they paid out and his car was a right off.

Saw another one today, red corsa, same road as the one I saw the black fiesta on, tax ran out last month. This is a busy road in a built up area. Thank god for lollypop ladies!
Oh, can I change the subject again? why do 4X4 drivers think that a huge heavy lump of steel will change direction quicker than the driver can think when the road is wet? it's not all about straight line speed. DUH! it's winter time the roads are slippy! I just love seeing them in the ditch.

Both had run out at the same time and i think he was waiting to get paid.
But that aint the point, all that matters is that the insurance companies will pay out even without MOT & tax.

Based on the feedback here, the NCT in Ireland would seem to be better controlled. But I stil have heard of stories of cars that should fail passing and cars hat should pass failing.
The problem with this monopoly is the company concerned gets greedy and is, shall we say, 'overzealous' on certain test items with the result that alot of cars fail and have to pay the retest fee.
A big problem is the headlights test, its accuracy tolerances are extremely tight. Even the local BMW dealers setup can't match the accuracy specs for the NCT for the headlight beam test!
My own car is due for its NCT in January and I have a bad feeling they will drag me back in again on some minor point.
