Sorry to hear of your car issues,It'll work out in the
end mate...

Has people been having issues with DP's in Kyle street?
TBH they aren't as attentive as Henry's were but,i find
them ok and since my cars over 4 years old now it makes
a big difference in service costs.

I've had a couple of recent wee problems and they've got
on it right away and got me back on the road within an
hour or two.

I keep picking up leaflets off my windscreen for an
Indie across in Ibrox but, know nothing about them?
Anyone used them?

Sorry, didn't mean to highjack the thread.  Consider knuckles wrapped.

Any update on the beast yet?

I read one of your earlier posts, am I right in thinking that BM Motors doesn't have any diagnostic gear?  Or did I pick you up wrong?

Yeah Davy doesn't have diagnostic equipment. Too expensive, not worth his while.

The car was picked up today and taken to the indie.

Keith from B4BMW phoned this afternoon to confirm the cylinders in question were indeed poorly and quoted 10 hours to dismantle the engine for further inspection @ £50ph.  He's confirmed that all gaskets / pcv etc will be replaced while they are accessible which is a plus point.

I've given the go ahead and once the state of play has been assessed then we'll see what Warranty Direct have to say.

Indeed, and every time the B10 or 540 conk(ed)s out I'm back in the 528, which, although not being cherished in the same fashion, has never let me down once in 5 years!

Despite being at work someone in the household thought to take a goodbye pic of the recovery chap and the car going on its way

Tata B10, hullo big bills...

Aww don't say that SirI'm getting worried for the future....

So the indie is just as stumped as we are and needs to take it apart.  I suppose it's the only way to tell.  Is that just 10 hours for doing one side of the bank or is that a complete engine strip?  It would be interesting to work on a big lump like that but quite daunting when you see bits of your cherished engine which aren't meant to see daylight.

Hope you can still make the RR day.

Keep us posted

Andrew

Well thumbs up to B4BMW so for.  I had a call from them on Friday to let me know that the engine had been stripped and that thankfully there appears to be no damage to the block other than a ruddy great hole in my head gasket between cylinders 3 & 4.

The conversation surrounded what should be done while the engine is in bits.  I'm keen to ensure anything that can be done to reduce the effect of 73k miles is carried out and the following work has been tabled:

M5 Head gasket replacement (a given)
Valley pan gasket
intake manifold gaskets
Exhaust gaskets
PCV replacement
Full injector clean (on a proper rig)
Re-seat valves
De-coke internals

The heads will also need to be pressure tested just to be on the safe side.

Does anyone have any further advice on what should or shouldn't be done at this point.  Although I'm fairly clued up about the M62 I'm a little less knowledgeable when it comes to internals.

Cheers

Hi Crombers

I can't add to that list.  Although if the HG went on one bank could you not argue that t'other bank should have it's HG replaced?  I know that's a big bill. Any idea what made one of them fail?

Your car is the 4.8 or is it a 4.6?  I did ask at the Feb meet but I've forgotten, sorry.  I suppose your block is essentially the same as mine just bored out a bit more which would make the distance between cylinders smaller, and mibbie more prone to HG failure?

I'm quite interested in finding out a bit more about my engine (N62 I think) but I'm not sure where to start.

Andrew,

The work on the failed bank will be replicated on the second bank.  Extremely false economy not to do so.

The original HG on the Alpina 4.6 V8 (B8 / B10) between 1997 & 2001 is an organic paper affair rather than the usual steel HGs used by BMW.  A ticking time bomb in effect :(   which as you say is not helped by the reduced distance between the cylinders.   This issue was address in 2001 when Alpina started using the steel X5 4.6i gasket in the B10s.

A menace, but not something you should ever need to worry about

The estimate is sitting at £2028, should hopefully hear what the Warranty company have to say this afternoon!

That's worrying... do you know if the 6-cylinder 3.2 and 3.3's use paper gaskets too?

It's a known V8 issue, think you're home and dry Stephen

Hi Crombers

You certainly do know your stuff!

Good to hear you are doing both HGs.  Anything organic in a cylinder head doesn't sound good.  Car stuff should be metal.  Ugg proper man parts!

Let us know about the warranty claim.  Will they cough up for both HGs do you think, or just the one that failed?

Crombers

I was down at B 4 BMW today to pick my car up and was asking Keith how your car was coming along and he said he was hoping to finish it very soon, maybe tommorrow with any luck.

so hopefully you'll be back on the road and I hope you were happy with the service they've given.

Once again they've come up trumps for me and I'll be using them again and it's the added bonus of having them on my doorstep

Cheers Stevie!  Didn't expect to get an update at this time of night!

Would be over the moon to see it tomorrow, get me away from blasted buses

I've certainly no complaints about Keith and the guys, extremely helpful on the phone. I just hope their mechanical skills match their communications skills as if they do then we've a tip top independant in our midsts!

Glad to hear the M5 is back on the road.
