The transmission fluid was leaking from the cooler on my 1997 520i.I have patched up the cooler and filled it with a cheap fluid to check everything worked before I pay out for a new cooler, and going round the block it seems o.k. Does anybody know of a good fluid I can use and where to get it from and how much it would cost. Thanks.

Welcome to the forum.
I get my oils from Opie Oils. Give Simon or Guy a shout regarding the best oil and they will help you out!

The BMW autoboxes are sealed for life and use very specific grades of oil.  Castrol Dexron III is most popular (Fords, GM etc and you can get it from Halfrauds £8/litre approx.) but I'm not sure for BMWs as they are quite specific.

You have a relatively early E39 so I take it that you have a dipstick and were able to top up the tranny via the dipstick tube?

At that age of car I would suggest that you take it to an Automatic Transmission specialist for a service and for him to fit the new cooler.  He will be cheaper than BMW and will put the correct fluid in the box for you.

K's link above will probably yield an answer.  Just don't believe the BMW sealed for life nonsense.

Well here you made a BIG mistake. Sorry to here this.

The only Automatic oil you could use is ESSO LT 71141 is a partsyntetic hydralic oil fore ZF autogearboxes.

If you mix this oil with ordinary ATF oil (Red) you get damaged in your gearbox and its absolutly forbidden. (BMW and MB specifications)

There is also a problem more. You cant empty the gearbox more then 1/3 of all oil if you dont take the box down and bring it to pieces.

There is around 9 liters total in a A5S310Z/5HP-18 and normal you change oil 3 times and with driving between this changes.

The only time you can change oil to another instead of the Esso LT in a ZF is after a total repair, then you can use Valvoline ATF fore example.

Esso LT 71141 (here its Statoil who sells it to BMW )
Thers is also Mercedes,  Audi,  Who also use the same gearboxes from ZF.
And sell the same oil
ESSO LT 71141  this should be the partnumber fore the oil  I think  Citroen and Peugeot  have the best price over here.
