BMW Sauber F1 Team - Test in Valencia - Day one

Test in Valencia.

January 21st – 24th 2009

Day one – Wednesday

Weather conditions: sunny all day, windy in the afternoon.

Air temperature: 9 – 16 °C, track temperature: 11 – 16 °C

Number of drivers participating: 1 (exclusive BMW Sauber F1 Team test)

Circuit length: 4.005 km

Robert Kubica
Chassis / engine: BMW Sauber F1.09-02 / BMW 86/9
Test kilometres today: 397 km (99 laps)

Programme:
On the first day of proper testing with the all-new BMW Sauber F1.09, the team continued the evaluation process begun yesterday during the shakedown. Robert Kubica concentrated on set-up work. The main tasks of the day were testing different brake set-ups and different tyre compounds. “Although it was quite windy in the afternoon, the conditions were better than yesterday because the track is building up grip with every lap I drive,” said Kubica. “The progress we made during the day shows that we are moving in the right direction with the development of the F1.09.”

Kubica completed 99 laps as well as conducting several race start simulations. In the morning he deliberately stopped on the track when he carried out a so-called fuel run-out, a standard procedure with every new F1 car.

What comes next:
The BMW Sauber F1 Team will continue testing in Valencia for three more days. Tomorrow Robert Kubica will again be at the wheel of the BMW Sauber F1.09. On Friday Nick Heidfeld will take over.

BMW Sauber F1 Team - Test in Valencia - Day two

Test in Valencia.

January 21st – 24th 2009

Day two – Thursday

Weather conditions: cloudy all day with strong winds in the afternoon.

Air temperature: 7 – 12 °C, track temperature: 9 – 13 °C

Number of drivers participating: 1 (exclusive BMW Sauber F1 Team test)

Circuit length: 4.005 km

Robert Kubica
Chassis / engine: BMW Sauber F1.09-02 / BMW 86/9
Test kilometres today: 465 km (116 laps)

Programme:
The team today continued its evaluation programme for the BMW Sauber F1.09. In the morning Robert Kubica tried different set-up solutions and once more carried out a number of race start simulations. Due to strong winds in the afternoon, the engineers switched their focus to overall reliability. Several long runs helped amass further basic data for the all-new car.

“While the morning was good, unfortunately the wind made testing quite difficult in the afternoon,” Kubica commented after completing 116 laps. “But we still got some interesting results which will help us understand the new BMW Sauber F1.09 better.”

What comes next:
After two days with Robert Kubica at the wheel, tomorrow sees the BMW Sauber F1.09 in the hands of Nick Heidfeld for the first of two more days of testing.

BMW Sauber F1 Team - Test in Valencia - Day four

Test in Valencia.

January 21st – 24th 2009

Day four – Saturday

Weather conditions: sunny with strong winds all day.

Air temperature: 13 – 18 °C, track temperature: 14 – 19 °C

Number of drivers participating: 1 (exclusive BMW Sauber F1 Team test)

Circuit length: 4.005 km

Nick Heidfeld
Chassis / engine: BMW Sauber F1.09-02 / BMW 86/9
Test kilometres today: 365 (91 laps)

Programme:
With gusts reaching 70 km/h, the weather again called for changes in the scheduled test programme. In the morning Nick Heidfeld concentrated on system checks for the new BMW Sauber F1.09. In the afternoon the engineers’ focus switched to collecting more data on the car’s mechanical components. “Although the test had to be interrupted once when the wind blew some debris over the track, I managed to do some long runs in the afternoon,” Heidfeld said. “I finished the day with some race start simulations on different tyre compounds.”

BMW Sauber’s Managing Director Walter Riedl added: “After Tuesday’s shakedown in Valencia we went on to complete four days of testing. Covering a total of 1,887 km, the new BMW Sauber F1.09 was running without any noteworthy problems, which meant we were able to carry out a comprehensive test programme on each day. At first it was a matter of testing the individual systems, after which we focused on set-up work. We managed to collect a great deal of data and have already made initial progress. Although the strong winds made testing difficult during the last two days, we benefited from the fact that the track was dry throughout and outdoor temperatures were higher than during our tests in December, which meant we were able to glean some valuable insights concerning the tyres as well. We have already used the 2009 version of the V8 engine with its rev limit of 18,000 rpm, as well as employing KERS. Overall we are very happy with the testing, particularly with regard to the high reliability of the new car. Now we are naturally very keen to see where we stand in terms of the competition, but we will have to wait for the next test to gain a first impression.”

What comes next:
With the four-day test session in Valencia over, the BMW Sauber F1 Team’s next outing will be the two tests in Bahrain in February (10th – 13th and 16th – 19th).

It is the first highlight of the 2009 Formula One season: the new BMW Sauber F1.09 completes its maiden laps in Valencia. Massive changes to the rules meant it was back to square one when developing the car. Robert Kubica was the first to get behind the wheel...

For some reason they only released this today!

BMW Sauber F1 Team - Test in Valencia - Day three

23-01-2009

Test in Valencia.

Day three – Friday

Weather conditions: overcast with strong winds all day.

Air temperature: 18 – 21 °C, track temperature: 18 – 23 °C

Number of drivers participating: 1 (exclusive BMW Sauber F1 Team test)

Circuit length: 4.005 km

Nick Heidfeld
Chassis / engine: BMW Sauber F1.09-02 / BMW 86/9
Test kilometres today: 367 (92 laps)

Programme:
With gusty winds reaching 50 km/h, the scheduled test programme had to be changed and the main focus of the morning’s work switched from set-up to reliability. Nick Heidfeld completed several long runs to put more mileage on the new F1.09. After the weather improved slightly in the afternoon, Heidfeld was at last able to work on the mechanical set-up.

“Finally I could drive the F1.09 for the very first time,” Heidfeld said after completing 92 laps. “We still have a lot of work to do, but we are making progress with each kilometre and the reliability is already there. Overall the F1.09 handles quite differently to last year’s car. Fortunately I managed to work on the set-up in the afternoon. The most important result after my first day of testing is that the car reacts as intended to set-up changes.”

What comes next:
Tomorrow will conclude the BMW Sauber F1 Team’s four-day test session in Valencia. (see above!)

not far to go now....

F1 regs = The distance of all races, from the start signal referred to in Article 38.9 to the chequered flag, shall be equal to the least number of complete laps which exceed a distance of 305 km (Monaco 260km).

Cats know your every thought.

But don't care.
