A friend of mine has just passed his test, hes 17 or 18.  hes being quoted 1,800 fully comp and 1,300 TPFT for the likes of a Fiesta or 106 .  Nobody else in his family have a car so adding him as a named driver isn't an option.

 

Does anyone know of a company that specialises in young folk where he could get a reasonable quote?

 

I had to laugh.  A BMW 735, fully comp, costs me less than 200 a year!!!

1 of my nephews was quoted around the same amount for insuring a wee car what a nightmare it is or them unless they can go down as a named driver.

Try Co-op (CIS)I went with them when I first started - they gave me 2 years NCD as a new driver which can be carried forwards. Think I paid about 500 odd for TPFT on an E30 316.. The following year I switched to Churchill's and saved over 100.

Maybe just trawl the internes using the price comparative websites - get a quote you like then look at the companies website, it may be cheaper on their own sites - ring them up an haggle, I do and it works

I've found churchill to be the best quoting for my soon to be 17 year old daughter on a provisional.

Even the IAM's insurance don't want to know them until they are 21.

Pass plus has to be the way to go for him, some insurers give them 30% for obtaining that.

With my daughter I've found that the car (within reason, sort of suzuki swift through to oldish 1.3 polo) doesn't make any difference.

I have been advised that a company in NI was the best for young lads, but I can't remember the name !

I think the quotes can vary but in general, it is usually well over $1000 for a new driver nowadays. I shall give you an example of why!

One of the apprentices at work has a v reg 1.4 VW golf (bit of a snob, won't buy a cheap n cheerful car!) his first couple of quotes were over 2k!  Anyway, within his first 3 months of driving he takes a roundabout too fast and meets Mr Kerb which bends his suspension and his wheel. I saw him driving last week at about 35 mph and about 35mm off another drivers bumper! lesson not learned methinks.

A 17 year old girl who lives close by went through 3 cars in her first 3 months (a new dent appeared every day) and I haven't seen her drive for the last few weeks so I can only assume she either lost her licence or can't afford a 4th car.

Young driver are still the loonies we give them credit for!

Adelaide are hoping to have things sorted for younger people this year, but that won't help 1st timers, as you'll need to have passed your test & attained your advanced (UK of course)

A lot of insurance companies do this. You have to contact them to tell them you do not wish to renew which really pi$$es me off.

I always arrange my wifes insurance however when it came to not renewing she had to ring them as they could not take my word for it. This is despite the fact that the money came out of my account and all correspondace was done through me. It is even more anoying since they did not ask me if I wanted a policy that would auto renew.

This trick has worked for me.....do a confused.com or direct line quote online and put your renewal date 2 weeks before it gets renewed then 2 weeks before the actual renewal comes through you get the calls,emails & letters remindning you its time to change!
