I have a 51 plate 3 series compact ti. it totally fails to start and the recovery guy says the crankshaft sensor could be faulty but his computer thingy also listed cam sensor 'a' not working as well. He said the injectors were not switching on which could indicate a crankshaft sensor failure or immobiliser problem. The car just cut out completely when at a standstill and that was it. has anybody else had similar problems? are any of these common failures? Any help would be much appreciated...are these parts expensive? and where is the crankshaft sensor located, somewhere reasonable? |

Welcome to the forum, I'll move this into the 3 series tech forum.
Sounds like an E46 variant. Edited by Rhys |

The sensors are quite a common fault.... Exhaust, inlet and crank are all the same part no. and they tend to fill with oil. We tend recomend they are all replaced and you will likely need the DME reprogrammed for the new sensors. |

I have the same problem. Does anyone know the easiest way to replace the crankshaft sensor on my 2002 316 Compact.1.8. Its right at the back of the engine Thanks Brian

The easiest way to get to the N42 Crank sensor is to remove the inlet manifold....this will give you direct access to it. You can try and fumble around underneath but by the time you have got past the brackets etc you would have removed the manifold and refitted it. when replacing the sensor make sure only 1 rubber seal is fitted...quite a few people forget to remove the old one, if you do then at 3000 rpm the engine dies as it can no longer see the crank.. |

Crank sensor. The cam sensor wouldn't cause it to stop, just run poorly.
Changing the crank sensor on the N42 Valvetronic engine is a complete and utter bitch requiring inlet manifold removal. Only ever fit a genuine BMW crank sensor - these are such a ballache to do, you don't want to do it twice. |
