Blimey Killian, I must have missed the fact your son was in the car. The good thing being that if the car seat is in properly and the wee fella is strapped in tight, there is a 99% chance he'll be 100% fine, but just to be on the safe side, I ditto what the others said. No doctor can say you are over-reacting when it comes to your kids and I dare them to argue!

Sorry to hear that K.

I hope you are o.k.

You have my sympathy.

I don't envy you having to go thru the insurance company lark.

I hope you get the car fixed o.k.

I take it you can still drive it, there are no weird electrical things going wrong from the impact?

Keep us posted on the repair.

Andrew

The car still drives with a slight vibration felt through it but we'll see what is the cause soon enough.
My neck is still feckin sore though which is more of an annoyance - I'll head to the doc this evening.

I rang the AA (my insurance broker) yesterday and told them. The insurance company then appointed a solicitor to handle it all for me. He is the same solicitor who dealt with last year's rear ending and also when I had an incident last January in my wife's car (guy pulled out of a junction in front of me and stopped!!!). Anyhow, the solicitor started slagging me - possibly not a good sign personally! I'll soon get a bad reputation!

Do you get any bonus for being a regular "customer"?

Always a bad sign to be on first name terms with a solicitor that doesn't handle your conveyancing!

Saw the doc this evening and he reckons it should be gone soon thankfully. Gave me some pills and sent me on my way.
Took the car to AC today for a quote. The drivers side chassis leg coming out towards the rear bumper is slightly bent.

Update: My insurance appointed solicitor eventually called me back today. Apparently the assessor has put a figure of 4,600-4,800 on the value of the car and the repairwork is 4,900approx. They want to go for an economic write off. I asked the solicitor to get them to avoid the write off declaration if they can.

Oh no!

Really sorry to hear that K.

I was looking at your pics earlier, damage doesn't look that bad does it?

That's not a bad value for the car, that's over 3k Sterling init?  I got about that as a trade in for my 1 year newer E39 last year.

You could buy it back off the insurance company and get it fixed yourself?

Andrew

I get to keep the car apparently.
The damage consists of:
* bootlid
* bumper
* bumper trim & boot mouth trim
* rear body plate
* floorpan dented
* right rear chassis leg dented

My solicitor is just off the phone to me.
Apparently the valuation is based on a salvage amount of 800 so they are actually offering me under 4K. This means that to get my car fixed will end up costing me money.
I have asked him to appeal the amount they are giving and have pointed him towards various prices online (including one for 10.5K!). Most of those online are of a lower spec than mine!

Don't know whether to or

Killian,

Try and argue the value of the car upwards. I doubt you will get very far but you may get a little more. Also argue the salvage figure down. There is no way that any breaker would value that salvage at 800.

Just to give you an idea, I had a very similar 98 written off a few weeks ago at 5200 with a salvage figure of 500.

Another way to look at it is this. If you want yo keep the car and they are going to give you 4000 then its not too bad. looking at the pics I would think you will get that repaired for a lot less than the estimate.

Killian, that's not too bad a price in todays market.  I know it sounds severe though.

Mine is a similar age, although miles on mine are probably a lot higher than yours.  I advertized mine on carzone for ages recently and had progressively dropped the price to euro3.8k without even getting a call (if you ignore the "what is your lowest price" calls and txt's from people that haven't even asked a question about the car).  Eventually I just took it off the web, looking to see if I can shift one of the others as my sisters e46 328i Touring is gathering dust waiting for me to buy it.

I'd take the money, keep the car and break it.  With the spec on yours there is a lot of value to extract from just the big bits on breaking it.

Why not take the money, break the car. Buy Dergside's and transplant any bits you want.

Sounds like a win win to me
