Hi there, I have recently purchased a much longed for M3. The engine has been changed, it has a red cam cover and air box which seem to be genuine, I would like to find out what type of engine this is?
Can you tell from the engine number?
The car is a 1987. Many thanks. Terry

 Terry to the mad world of E30 M3 ownership.

IMHO a red cam cover & airbox doesn't necessary mean anything, but yes you can tell the type from the engine number.

I'm sure some expert (which I'm not)  will be along shortly to tell you how, in the meanwhile I'll do a little 'googling' on the subject for you.

i have looked on bmwmregistry the engine might be out a cecotto i'll have to do some detective work. The car goes very quick, more than 200 brake. I have got some history, i have taken 3 off the road and removed front wings scrapping off underseal and seam sealer and checking for cracks and tin worm. I will try send pictures on progress.   thanks

Pinched the following two quotes from a previous thread to save you searching:

Source = BMG M3

Remember that the engines can be grouped by the engine code ( stampped below the engine number on the block )which will show it as either an early 195 bhp engine, or the late 215 bhp engine with the more desireable late spec cylinder head,cams and TB's. Special editions had different codesand specs,but the basic 2.3's can be split this way.

Source = Andyclient

Engine codes are

234EA 195BHP

234S2 215BHP

245S1 2.5l

cheers

Andy

Don't rely on the colour as an indicator of the engine, the covers and air boxes are very easily refurbed and colour changed.

Quoting from Original BMW M Series" by James Taylor (which has been known to be wrong):

"The Cecotto edition introduced [in April 89] the 215 BHP cat equipped engine five months before it replaced the 195bhp cat and 200bhp non-cat types on mainstream production M3s."

I think the car has to be a Cecotto or the chassis number has to be AE40900 or higher for it to be 215BHP.
