Help E34 Air Con Fan 535

   Hi guys,
I recently replaced the aircon fan on my 1989 535i sport. At the same time I replaced the sensor that is located on the left hand side of the radiator as you look at it. The air con fan works fine when you press the button.
The sensor I changed has 3 wires that plug into it which I believe sets the air con fan in motion when the engine gets hot when ticking over while stationary.
When I took the old sensor out the plug with the wires fell apart so I couldn't see where they came from. I have tried the wires in different positions but cannot get it to come on when the engine gets hot. 
Can anyone tell me which wires go on what terminal?
