years back i was taken to an airfield called brunton (up near alnwick), where learner drivers were welcome to drive on the dissused airfield and airfield roads. it was spot on for a taste of driving before i started taking lessons. ive been informed that the land owners have now stopped this.

is anyone aware of another location where this is ok to do?

If you search Yell or google them, you'll get the number.  I think you can turn up (when they're open of course), but you may need some ID for the learner.
