I've posted a few times before about VRT anomolies - and some opportunities to take advantage of them. Heres one to avoid Came across one today - checked a '04 120i 5dr - boggo basic spec. VRT with 25k miles is euro10667. A same age and mileage (higher spec) 120i SE 5 dr is approx euro4.5k. Go figure! |

And if you check the same car tomorrow, the VRT price will probably have changed again. Not an exact science and highly unreliable. If I was serious about bringing a car in, I would prefer a written quote. Edited by Bayerische |

Will the vrt office in santry provide written quotes? Online its quoting 6.5k+ for an 02 330ci iirc I heard they won't even take cash anymore you have to have a draft for the amount so maybe they have to quote and stick to it? |

They usually seem to change the VRT figures on the first of each month. The usual approach they take is to reduce the figures by approx 1% per month. Occassionally they will revalue a car where they feel an anomoly has developed. This can be a downward or upward adjustment. If you have printed off the correct details and it is current to within a few days then I believe they will usually go with the figure you have printed. This assumes they don't make any adjustments for specification. They won't take cash anymore. Don't think they will take credit cards. BTW - I think the anomoly in this case is that the figure quoted for the 120i is based on the full original cost newwhereas the 120i SE is based on a depreciated figure that they equate to the OMSP. I'd say there is a strong case for an appeal in such a situation but in these cases you have to pay the VRT they ask for first and then appeal. If you had done sums on a 120i SE and then found a boggo 120i it would be reasonable to assume that the VRT would probably be slightly less. I'm guessing it could give rise to a shock if they demanded 6k more than you expected! Edited by Dergside |

That would be my worry i have a good friend who deals in mercs and the like and he reckons on one occasion the revenue crowd have looked into a car(c220cdi coupe 2004) and just decided on the spot that they want 500 extra for the leather seats-which you can't give them in cash. And he'd given a price for the car it may even have been prov sold at that stage...........Not a happy bunny That price on the 120i could give someone a nasty shock |

Most times they don't pick up on any options fitted, in my experience. Having said that, if you annoy one of them then I'm aware that they can be prickly!

Sorry for the slight detour on this thread but I may be paying out a bit on VRT quite soon and the car in question started life as a SE spec but has had a retrofit up to the m-sport. I was going to declare it as a SE (that’s what the log book says) that costs €9775. When they inspect is they should notice that it looks like an m-sport spec, that costs €10722. In your experience will they just charge me the higher of the two or will common sense prevail? Maybe split the difference? |

Park the car as far away from the VRT office as possible and just bring them in the log book. Both in Limerick and Ennis out of about 10 cars ive only ever had them look at one and thats because customs had called to the house about it so they went into "screw him mode".

Blue bullet - the basic VRTfigure they come up with will be based on the spec of the car described on the registration document so if its an SE on the log book that is what they will base the VRT charge on. They do have the right to charge you additional VRT on options but my experience of a decent number of cars over the years is that they don't pick up on them. That includes cars that have been heavily optioned. They are more likely to pick up on visible luxury features such as leather for example, but they are rarely knowledgeable enough to know that a UK model year 2000 318i SE didn't have pdc or mfsw as standard but they were standard on a 2001 model year car. Likewise they will rarely know what spoilers are standard or options. |
