    Posted: 10-November-2003 at 12:29
Bought an E36 EVO from a garage and the seller advice was not to use the full power until the engine oil pressure reading was at 100. But reading the manual it is giving me information saying its ok to use the power along as its between the 50 - 100 mark. Is this generally correct?

Pretty impressed with the fuel consumption - have put £40 quids worth of Super unleaded in and I get a return of around 280 -300 miles. Now thats not driving like a granny nor is it driving like a stolen car its just general overtaking, stuck in traffic on the way to work etc.

My mate has a 2002 WRX 5-speed Scooby 2.0 turbo and can only get around 200-240 miles on the same amount of fuel. The the BM is alot quicker carrying a 3.2litre so is it because I have a sixth gear? or do turbos generally use more fuel?

Hiya Topcat, welcome back.

The 6th gear was put in exactly as almost an 'overdrive' for fuel consumption. The BM will be heavier than the scoobie but its the torque and power range the M3 has that will cause scoobs etc to have probs against Ms as speed increases.

Powerwise, i drive under 4000rpm until the oil gauge is almost halfway up the scale which equates to approx 8-10miles from stone cold.

Is this an oil temp guage??

And what does 100 represent?

The oil pressure won't alter until fully warmed and then at idle it will be slightly lower than it is when cold.

John, what sort of fuel consumption returns do you get from your M3?

Also how much are tyres, front and rear? Whats a good make to go for? My wheels are the same design and size.

Theres 2 options on these based around the wheels-235/40*17 all round or 225/45*17 front and 245/40*17 rear.

Usual suspects are Bridgestone,Pirelli,Continental,Michelin Pilot sports etc.

I put Vredestein ultracs on the front and am gonna stick them on the rear too soon-good tyres with good grip at non-exhorbitant prices.

I average about 26-27mpg usually using optimax.

I've a 97 Evo and find I can get closer to 32 mpg with Just less than 320 miles to a tank of Optimax. This Optimax is the gear to use with these M3's, Shell is the Forecourt to head for. You might pay a little more per litre, but will get more miles to the gallon with better responsiveness. The 100 represents degrees C as before on my last M3 it was just less than 210 which must have been degrees F. Does this sound about right?

I have Michelon Pilot Sports all round on mine and although they are mighty noisey they do have very decent grip. And see Michelen have developed a new Pilot Sport, a quieter one! Can't remember wher i read this but I'm sure it'll be on the Michelen wedsite somewhere.

What octane is Optimax. Is it right in saying that in the U.K. unleaded fuel is 95 octane and super unleaded is 97 octane, and then theres SHELL Optimax which is a super type unleaded? Maybe 97 or 98 octane?

I might check this out on the web.

Just found out it's 98 octane. Best to run on that.

No John i haven't touched it. Apparently its only 97 Octane and I'm happy running mine on the 98 Octane and until an oil company come out with an alternative to Optimax, I'm not too fussed. Unless, of course someone tries the Ultimate and lets us know! Whats your opinion on the chrome'y mesh grill?

Update lads on the Mighty Economical Mighty M3 Evo. Could not find a Shell garage for love nor money today and managed to break into 352.9 miles on the odometer with single figures on the OBC range thingy, 8 miles left. I hate doing that and don't like taking the tank so low, at least I know the gauge is working alright. But how about that, 353 miles, almost! Well chuffed

Not too sure on the chrome mesh-be a pain if you take the bumper off, fit it, refit bumper and it looks naff!!

Might be ok if coupled with chrome mesh kidney grills tho.

Pain in the ass dont bother changing the mesh!!! Get Hella's + Crystal Fogs and Projector/crytal indicators (Like mine) and it really brightens up the front end, no need for mesh!!! Keep the ///M-mesh!!!

I'm not too sure about the E36's, but i'm pretty sure the E30 M3 isn't supposed to go above 3k until the oil is at 75 degrees. That's the way I drive mine!
You can definately tell when the car is ready, it feels more responsive.

James

Cheers John, for the warm-up info.

Getting use to it a little more now. A bit difficult in this type of weather though!

You might have to give us a few pointers on driving it fast, its alot different to the 318is I use to have.

I think is awesome!

Tony

Get a long straight, get the car in 2nd, hold it about 3500rpm then floor it and don't change up til you hit the redline dashed area. Watch your neck and kidneys.

Not advisable in the wet!

Ok, will do. Sounds like a neck braking excerise!

I'll try it on the way to work next week, seeing that this weekend is great weather for ducks!

Tony.
