Hi guys - I haven't posted in a while... Well, I finally sold the Skyline, so funds became available for me to get the "family car" my missus has been bugging me to get for ages.

I picked up this little beauty in Belfast last week:
http://picasaweb.google.com/crispinlyne/NewBeemer

I'm going to clear it next week - bracing myself for VRT of 6k+ ..

Still... while it doesn't compare to a 350hp twin turbo skyline, I think I have managed to get something that will keep me reasonably happy on my daily commute

Cheers Eamo - The Westfield is going well.  Has been a bit slow over winter, but getting things moving well now and will hopefully have it on the road for mid-summer.

If you're interested, I can e-mail PDFs of the magazine articles I've had published so far.

Cheers lads - I'm happy with the 330d so far.  It's a full Sport spec '01 model.  Fully loaded - xenons, electric memors seats, full leather sport interior, cruise control,  CD stacker etc...etc... Same old story - no chance of finding anything like this in Ireland so had to go up North to get one.

One thing though - I think it is suffering from a problem that I believe is quite common in BMW diesels of this age.  It's lacking the punch you'd expect from a 3 litre diesel and I'm struggling to get 26mpg on a combined city/highway run.  I've read of this same type of problem on loads of forums, and according to the experience of others it is going to be one of the following:
- MAF Sensor
- Vacuum actuation system for the turbo and/or EGR valve
- EGR valve itself

I replaced the MAF already, so I know it is not that - what I want to do now is take it to a specialist who knows these engines well and can do all the necessary diagnostics on the turbo and vacuum system.

Is there anyone that would be recommended in Dublin who knows a lot about these 3-litre diesel engines?

Thanks again,

CGL

Had the same problem with the 530d, although we didn't know until the car
broke down. (drove but felt like it was firing on three cylinders) The dealer
sorted it and it goes like a misile now. Try Al in AC Cars or Breech Motor
Works in Walkinstown.

Wait 'til you feel the kick in the backside it gives when you floor it. Better
then my M3.

That's a nice engine, loads of torque at low rpm. That looks like a good buy, Topaz Blue is a nice colour and it goes well with tan leather. Nice one!

Hi mate,

My problem turned out to be a faulty boost sensor.  Robbie (at AC Cars on the South Circular Road) did a diagnostic for me and a code came up for the failed sensor.  We replaced it and the difference was instantaneous.  So as a result I would now list the possible causes of lack of performance in a BMW 330d/530d as the following:

- MAF Sensor (engine air flow sensor)
- Vacuum actuation system for the turbo and/or EGR valve
- Boost Sensor

I believe the most common issue that causes poor performance from these engines is a faulty MAF - over the years deposits build up on the 'hot wire' the sensor uses to measure air-flow and cause inaccurate readings.  The easiest way to test this is to disconnect the MAF and run the car as normal.  With the MAF disconnected the car reverts to a fuelling curve based on throttle position and engne speed instead of airflow - If it runs better after this then the MAF is at fault and needs replacing.

The MAF is easy to find.  You might have to take off an engine cover or two for access, but as you stand at the front of the car facing the engine bay it is located in in the near left hand side.  You can see the air intake tract running from above the radiator around to the left hand side of the engine and the MAF is located at this bend.  You'll see a wiring connector coming out of the loom that plugs into the sensor that makes up part of the intake tract.  Disconnect this and see how you go.

If this test does not result in any improvement, then the best thing for you to do is take the car to an (independent) specialist and get a diagnostic done.  If any codes come up for the problems above then replace the parts accordingly.

I can't tell from your profile if you are in Dublin, or indeed, Ireland.  But if you are then I would recommend taking the car to AC Cars on the Sth Circular.

Hope this helps - cheers,

CGL

By the way - for anyone who's interested - the PDFs of my Westfield Build can be found here:
http://wiesel.4shared.com/

The first three are on there now, I've actually had 5 published so far and I submitted the sixth yesterday, so I'll get organised and put the rest up soon.

Let me know what you think - cheers,
