Boys in Blue get luxury BMW

This is the top of the range new weapon in the garda battle against car crime ? the BMW 530d.

Gardai have taken delivery of 15 new high end BMWs ? 530ds and 525is ? in the past few days and the vehicle are currently being kitted out for service at a garage in Offaly.

Most of the new cares, which cost up to ?70,000 a piece, are specifically bought to help Gardai in high speed chases on the M1, M6 and M7 motorways.

The 530d can go from 0 to 60 in seven seconds and has a top speed of 240kph ? around 20kph than the criminals car of the choice the Lexus 430.

The cars are currently the vehicle of choice for traffic police with the London Metropolitan Police. The new BMWs are today being given garda livery and are being fitted withteh forec?s telecommunications system. They will be deployed in the coming weeks.

A garda spokesman confirmed that the force had taken delivery of the vehicles and that they were being worked on to prepare them for deployment.

Just saw an unmarked 530d Touring 07-D-144XX on Merrion Square.

The car was Deep Green Metallic and had the flashing lights really nicely hidden in the front grill.

Dunno how much high speed chasing will be going on in Merrion Sq though!

I don't think it is that a waste of money. I am sure they are much better suited to the job than the pieces of crap the Gardi are driving in now. What I am pissed off is what all those ministers spend they money on.

Also get the roads fixed, it is freegin annoying I am swerving around everywhere trying to avoid potholes. I could bury a dead cat in the size of the potholes littered all over the city.

Rant over.

yes it is - don't you think it's worthwhile? They're doing a job, they deserve the tools. And being on the road, they deserve a decent and safe 'office' environment.

Fully agree - some of the current vehicles they have aren't up to the task.

Don't the traffic corps have pretty much their choice of cars? Quality or safety never really came into it AFAIK.

Dunno Killian. But they've had Volvos & Saabs, they're safe cars. Subarus have a high degree of active safety. BMWs are.

Do they have a car evaluation process like they do in the UK for stopping distances, handling when laden with Police kit, performance etc..?

Octavia vRS estates would be another good motor; the previous one was very highly rated by UK police. A mates vRS MkI that was on track @ the VIP day had incredible brakes - stopped like hitting a wall time after time and pedal stayed firm with little fade. I was impressed.

I saw a LS reg Mondeo pulling a chap in a red golf yesterday on the protlaiose by-pass. I thouhgt all Garda cars had D reg???

It had blues in the grill and went past me well over the ton..

Whats the story? its getting harder to spot them all the time.

Sounds a bit mad alright! And very devious. All the NI cars I see around the place are hosing it.

To be honest, it must be a right pain being a youngfella trying to break the law all the time for cheap, dangerous thrills. I'm glad I broke the 30yr mark, am more sensible, & have a wife who tells me to go slow. God help me if we have kids - I'll be the worst traffic cop I know.

I suppose it is, I'm just a bit jealous. It will save alot of money in tyre bills from the swap to rear wheel drive.

They've had Saabs before and apparently Subarus but they've never had Volvos, the UK have Volvo S60 and V70 T5s which may be front wheel drive but they still have a lot of pace.
