Went into the local BMW main dealer (Eamo you know where I am talking about) and asked how much would it cost to trade up my 02 320d ES with 98,000 miles on the clock to a 2003. I was shocked to say the least when I was told that it would cost me €15,000 plus my own car to go up a year. Now granted the car had leather and less mileage I think 50,000 miles or so but still. Is this right. One thing to bear in mind is that I was sitting in the same showroom 6-8 months ago and I was offered a 00 320d ES for €16,000. I spent a little more privately and got a great 02 320d ES instead.

Don’t get me wrong I am totally happy with my current car but I would have been tempted to go up to a 2003 if the price was right but for €15,000 I could buy the other half a cracking little car.

He was offering €17,000 is this a fair price? Do you think he was getting me back for not buying the car from him initially?

That is BMW main dealers for you. How else do you think they pay for their fancy showrooms?

Thats not unusual atall mate.  They really do hike the price up.  Whats even worse, is he was prob giving you less for your car than he said, as his sell price on the 03 was actualy less then it was priced at, and cuz you have a trade in, he will nock very little off the new car.  Been there done that and never again!

They are robbers!!!!!

I miss my m3.......

Yes but the car did have half as many miles on the clock. Milage is a big factor when valueing a car and 50,000 extra miles does make a huge difference to the price.

Also the depreication of a car over the course of a year is quite a lot, especially when your talking about 4 and 5 year old cars.

Although it sounds alot, TBH I think it's to be expected.

That is mad money!

To Peter's point regarding mileage, a adjustment figure of 100euro per ,000 miles is about right for one of these, giving a price difference between the cars of about 5k based on mileage.  An adjustment in market value to come up a year would be in the order of 3.5-4k making the price to change in the order of 8.5-9k euro.  Add another grand or two because its a main dealer and to give a margin on the old car and its still overpriced by 4-5k euro.

Now: BMW 523i SE '00, 318i SE - e91 '07, 325i Coupe '93.

Prev:
e46 328i SE Touring, 330Ci, 318Ci.
e39 523i SE.
e36 325i Coupe *2, 323i SE, 316iSE.
e30 325iSE 2dr, 320i Conv, 320i 2dr, 316i.

Friend of mine bought a '02 530d last year from a dealer for 32,000 Euro.
He wanted to go up to a '05 530d from the same dealer and was offered
17,000 for his car. Only done a few thousand miles in it. He didn't buy it.

i had the same problem with a bmw dealer on the naas road i was looking to trade in an audi a4 against a 01 525 he only offered me 11 grand for my car i ended up selling it privately for 17 grand i think big garages are a rip off when it comes to trading in cars

IMHO you always sell privately then go looking for a replacement cash in hand. This is also the worst time of year to shop for a car in a dealership.  Their coffers are overflowing at the moment with all the new car sales...they can afford to be arrogant and let you walk away without buying.

Come July the shoe is on the other foot. Buyers are thin on the ground and car sales people start to feel the pinch in the comission department.

It also has to be said that private sellers are struggling to get rid of their used cars so a trip to carzone once you have yours sold is likely to turn up some bargains.
