    Posted: 22-January-2007 at 15:30

Hello all,

I have a question regarding the Motorsport variant of the E24 635 CSi & M635 CSi.

Both were called "Motorsport Edition" and had some extra bits and pieces on them.
But I'm trying to find out more about the specifics of these add-ons and other (technical?) modifications.

I do know the M635 had even a slight engine mod, producing 292 BHP iso 286 BHP. But furthermore, how can one make an M635 even more "motorsport"??

Can anyone shed more light on these special UK-only 6-series cars?
What were the exact modifications to these cars, how "different" were they in relation to the normal versions, how many were made, and were there things like certificates or other special things given to customers when delivered new?

Were these mods done in the UK, or were they made like this completely in Germany at the factory?

Perhaps there were even more UK E24 variants that I do not know of yet.

Would be glad to hear from you.

Best wishes from Holland,
Ronald.

The 635 Motorsport Edition was a UK-only marketing exercise like the  over-rated E30 Cabriolet & consisted of a collection of options under one option code (129). It seems there were only 188 produced.

The options included:
  • Limited Slip Diff
  • M-Tech steering wheel
  • Sports seats
  • Larger 415 TRX wheels & tyres (although I believe all Highlines had them). These larger wheels included the M635 arch extentions.
  • Shadowline (de-chrome)
These were all available on the standard car. The special "Motorsport" options were:
  • Misano Red/Nogaro Silver/Macau Blue (all Motorsport only colours)
  • Graduated green tint screen
  • Colour-coded bumpers
  • Bilstein shocks & (alledgedly) uprated springs
I have heard of the M635 Motorsport Edition. It was probably a cosmetic upgrade although there was an alledged increase to 292bhp. No idea how many were made.

Twelve. Apparently. I've got an article about it somewhere.... one David R. Cornell featured in it. You could almost taste the smugness dripping off the page

Hi Andy, many thanks for this detailed info!

Just one question though, the top-half of the options you mentioned, were available to order on any other 635CSI, but I assume they all were, together with the bottom-half, fitted to the Motorsport variant as standard?

I assume they were all Manuals (635CSi)?

Best wishes,

Ronald.

You mean David Connell. I'll never get over how arrogant the guy was
about some rear ended and repaired 6 Series and the fantasy power
figures (330 bhp??)
Didn't he used to sweep the floor at Maranello Concessionaires or
something?

No idea, but he was very picky about letting people touch his car.

Here is his car:

...and here it is again:
