Hi I've recently purchased a 98 323 coupe an m-series one, all very nice etc. apart from one thing. The guy I bought it off had it fitted with a set of 18in M3 wheels (Below), the tyres are Uniroyal Rain Sport 225/40 ZR 18 W all round, the problem is with too much weight in the back (a couple of fat people) I get tyre rub on the rear rims, also at full lock the fronts rub on the suspension strut (I think). As far as I'm aware the suspension is still standard, question is can I get away with fitting a different set of tyres (lower profile etc.) to stop the rub or do I need to modify the suspension???

Any sugestions???

You could try rolling the lips of the rear arches, although it's better to get a pro to do it. Alternatively get some 17" M3 alloys with tyres and replace the ones fitted. If you go for lower profile tyres you may still get the same problem but also get a rougher ride into the bargain. On the suspension front, I'm unsure as it has M Tech suspension fitted as standard. Perhaps someone more knowledgable can step in there!

IIRC the car started out with 195/60 R15. According to Toyo's tyre converter - http://www.toyo.co.uk/converter/table9d.html - there are a number of possible fitments @ 18" for you... none of which are 225/40. Try 225/35 maybe? Also worth a quick phonecall to a couple of BMW Specialists or even a dealer (they should have fitted 18s on your model - ACS or Alpina -  before)and enquire as to what they find a suitable size...

Personally I am running 235/40 17" with no problems.

Oh, and your coupe does have M-Tech suspension - all coupes do.

You could also stop giving big boned people lifts ;-)

Here ya go

Specification  Sidewall   Radius  Diameter  Circumference  Revs/Mile  Difference
195/60-15         4.6in          12.1in    24.2in         76.1in                      833                0.0%

225/40-17         3.5in          12.0in    24.1in         75.7in                      837               -0.5%

235/40-17         3.7in           12.2in   24.4in         76.7in                       827               0.8%

225/35-18         3.1in          12.1in    24.2in         76.0in                      833               -0.0%

225/40-18         3.5in          12.5in    25.1in         78.8in                      804                3.6%

225/40's shouldn't be a problem on your Coupe; I have a friend with 225/40s allround -

and another with 255/35's on the rear (but he has had his arches rolled!)

18's can present a rough ride, a better bet for comfort, looks and affordability (replacement 18 tyres are costly) are 17 inchers, without a doubt.  As you can see above, 225/40-17 are as near as spot on radius as you can get to the original, other than 225/35-18, and they are gonna cost loads.....

Are you sure they are rubbing on the front strut? If they are then I'd check to i0 make sure the strut et al is OK and ii) make sure that they are not 9 inch rims on the front.  You can get 9 & 8 inch rims (the 9's being for the rear), but they wont fit on the rear of the e36; they are e46 fitment....

I've got a set of '99 standard fitment 15inchers with 205 Goodyear rubber on my coupe which I hope to change in the new year; wanna do a deal...?
