Quick boy racer question...
Which is faster (0-60, quarter mile, 30-70 etc), an E36 M3 or an E39 540i? Cheers |

The E36 is marginally quicker. Over 1/4 mile it'll have a 0.5 second gain on 540i. However, over 100mph, the 540i will make the time back up. In real world terms, the 540i would seem the quicker for its ease of driving, but the reality is there is very little in it. |

321 bhp with less weight and the 540 will catch up over 100mph? are you sure? |

The grunt of the 540i over 100mph is very impressive, remembering its a 4.4 V8 under the bonnet. Perhaps I shouldn't have said it'd make the time back-up, but I think you'll find that the 'visible' difference between the cars would be nothing like you might imagine. |

Oh hang on a minute. b******s. My apologies. I forgot that the 540i's 4.4 V8 was the 286bhp version. Forget what I said. The E36 M3 would walk it.

I wouldn't be so sure, yes off the line the M3 would have the advantage but as weight has no bearing on top speed and the 540 has approx 325lbs ft compared the the Evo's 258 (236 for non Evo) I think the 540 would start to catch up... |

Cheers guys. The reason I ask is because I'm looking at getting an E39 M5 but my budget is at the lower end of the market (£10-12k) and there's not much about for that price, so was considering the 540i but didn't want to lose too much in way of performance over my M3.
Has anyone got the actual figures of both to hand? |

Cheers Andy - no comparison really!
Does anyone know of anywhere else where I might find an M5 other than AutoTrader and Pistonheads? I'm checking every morning and not much is on there in my price range apart from really high milers and low spec cars. When a good one does come up it's gone within a few days (been looking for 6 months now!!!) |
