whilst driving yesterday I was getting a "clonk" from the drivers side front
wheel when it was roling over a bump. Just took the front wheel off to
check for loose things but all seems tight and present. suggestions?

Have you removed the anti rattle clips from the brake pads to fit different offset rims?  Mine makes some strange clonks because of this...

Have you tried the anti roll bar drop link. These are prone to clonking when worn.

new top mounts a couple of hundred miles ago. the drop links seemed
tight enough when I had it jacked up on the body.

Danny, i had a big prob with the focus, got a pain in the arse in the end, everyone said roll bat links, in the end i took the links off and tried it over a few holes (carefully!)ie without the roll bar...still did it...was a top mount!.

i know you said you had new mounts, but if you tried it without the roll bar it might tell you something by elimination...just an idea

Bottom ball joint?

Or any of the other things mentioned.

Start with the cheapest/easiest to replace & work your way through until it stops.
