Isn't it a timing chain?

Yes, it has a timing chain which doesn't have a specific interval to be changed. In theory it should last as long as the rest of the engine.

The e34 @ 165,000 is still on it's original chain. Have receipt showing that it was checked by Joe Duffy and passed as 'fit' at about 140,000.

Whilst on this subject with regards to the timing chains, whilst they seem to be fairly robust, are there any issues to be taken into account such as general maintenance on them to keep them in good order?

Err, not necessarily - not if it's a E30 M3 - fully synthetic wasn't around in them days - stick to what we know!
