was a sensor installed with the brakes (measuring the amount of pad left)?

As kbannon said it's probably the brake sensor or abs sensor that needs replacing. Had the same thing happen on replacing all my brakes a couple of years back. Subsequently replaced the brake sensors and all was back to normal.

very little £5 or £6 from Euro Car Parts (don't know about the e36 but the e30 has a sensor on front passenger and rear drivers sides)

many brands of pads come with a sensor. (in saying that, my sensor system didn't work after that [I think because of the service indicator board] so I just removed the bulb )

If you can take a wheel off you can do it. It's just a lead that plugs onto the pad.

not necessarily - you are assuming that the pad comes with a built in sensor which not all do. You may need to take the pads out and insert the sensor.
Get yourself a Haynes manual (or preferable a Bentley manual)
