unfortunately the extras you've put on it just make it easier to sell, they don't add any extra value to the car but if you find a private buyer willing to pay more...

this is what it's worth as a trade-in:

here's another "Value Question"

how does someone value say ... the like's of a "SCHNITZER" model?

are they valued the same as a standard spec model or is it all down to folk noing what type of extra's/options have been fitted (from new)   does/should it say Schnitzer on the log book to class it as a real one?

is this the standard extra's  to expect of a schnitzer model: full schnitzer body kit, carbon door piller cover's, alloy's (17, 18, or 19") and suspension fitted from new

It is very difficult to value a schnitzer model. The car is in effect modifed and as such will cost more to insure. This will put a lot of potential buyers off. To get the highest value you need to sell privately since most dealers will give you nothing extra over a standard car. Selling it may take some time since you have reduced the potential market for the car but the right person will pay more for your car over a standard one.

Also don't forget that at the moment the used car market is very slow so it is not a good time to sell.

The more specialist or individual car you have, the more narrow the market it's going to appeal to but at the same time, this can have the effect of putting the price up because there aren't so many on the road so the people who do want them will pay that little bit more for the exclusivity <spelling?

On the other hand, putting your own extras on can have a negative effect. Have you ever seen the program on telly where the american woman come into peoples homes when they are unsuccessful at selling them and she rips the house to shreads saying how their personal taste doesn't suit everyone, then buys magnolia for the walls and seagrass carpet, within a week it's sold! It's the same principal. The more stuff you add, the more individual you make it, therefore other people might not like it. But I will say, yours does look stunning and I'd probably be one of those who pays over the odds coz it's nice!

Regards

Mike

I was thinking about trading mine in against an 02 2002 530d SE priced at £13000 and the guy was going to give me £4400 to £4500.  Parkers trade was about £4140.

Now at BMW against an 02 2002 530d SE priced at £16000 the salesman said he would only give me £2000 to £2500

Got a mate at the local garage to look up Glass and he said it would be worth around £4500.  Needless to say I didn't buy the oil burner from BMW!

Like you Ian I have a 523i SEA/tip but on a 98 S plate.

Andrew

It does make you wanna cry though!

Hi chaps,

First post on the new board - what happened to the old one? - musical differences eh?  Can't imagine what there would be to fall out over with a forum?

This thread caught my eye as I am planning to sell my beloved E39 535 in favour of a 330 Sport Convertible in the next few months.

Would anyone be able to tell me what I should be asking for it - 1998 535i Auto 107k fbsh, lots of extras, well cared for.

I reckon it will be between £5k and £6k, but any info welcome.

I'll be sad to see it go as it is the best car I've ever had - can't fault it at all, but I love cabrios and since we had to sell my wife's mx5 when our family arrived I've been waiting for the day i'd get a topless model (if only!) again...

Just got to live with that depreciation though (mine is more or less static at the moment, even though it costs a few bob to run.

Cheers,

Ali
