On a 98' 5 ser........on a cold engine..

Went out yesterday to check after having it pressure tested (and it was fine), the coolant was about an inch from the bottom of the bottle, I took the cap off and loosened the bleed screw (the one next the cap on the exp bottle) so as to let any air out while topping up (so breakdown said)..

What happen's.....

The coolant level rises up the "cold" level.....is this normal...if not What's happened?

Just a theory, but it may be where the system is under pressure and you letting the air out dislodges any air bubbles in various places and the coolant then finds it's own level again?

Regards

Mike

Could be an airlock. I had one in my jeep. Had a good luck and realized my head gasket is gone.  You should check yours if it keeps happening.

Vpricey......yea before anything goes in!

What I did find out tonight while out.......when starting a journey within about 1-2 the temp gauge goes near the red....I stop and let air out from the nipple nearest the stat (as it's the highest point) then drive for a further 8 or so mile's with no prob's at all.

It did this twice...after stopping twice..
