Has anyone got any good ideas how i can remove the 'End cap' that screws into the side of the timing case on a 318is? I wish to change the hydraulic timing chain tensioner. It looks like the last person who did work on my car didn't bother to fit the aluminium washer under the cap head; they just tightened it down as far as it would go in to the casting.

Sockets just spin, stilsons rip the nut apart, I have also tried heating it, but have to be careful not to ruin the gaskets near by, tried welding another nut to the end of the original, but this tore off with half of the original nut... Tried chiselling it round, but again no luck.

Anyone got any other suggestions? before i resort to further violence.

Where are you?
I have some australian tools, that are a variation on the stilsons theme , that are designed to deal with this

If your too far away, can you get a drill to it, to use an extractor?
Best Wishes

Nigel,

I'm in Wimborne, Dorset.

Can't get into drill it, too near the chassis leg. But i feel this maybe what i have to do. Which means i'll have to raise or drop the engine to clear the chassis leg.

The main problem is the depth of the head, it's only approx 5mm deep & 19mm across flats. It's a bit chewed up from my previous attemps to remove it.

You going to Gaydon? If so i would like to see the tool in question.

Thanks

Mark

I wont be going to Gaydon, which is disgusting really, as its only down the road for me, my beamer isnt on the road at the moment.
I'm in Worcester, I will go to my workshop later and photograph the tools for you.
Are you a club member Mark ?
If I can be sure of who you are I'd be happy to send them down overnight on monday, you would get them tuesday.
But following recent events on here, I'd need to be sure I can get them back.
Sorry to be a bit negative, they werent actually expensive (about £30 for all four), and (blushes) I got them from QVC, ( dont tell anyone else on here I watch it lol
Best Wishes

Nigel

Nigel,

I am certainly a fully paid up Club member, also belong to the E30 Register, got a couple of small mentions in this months club mag too! Haven't got my mag to hand, so can't quote page numbers, but their is a picture of my 318is (H690 TSS) with other E30's at the Bristol Classic Car show.

Picture of the tool would be great as i wouldn't want to go to the expense of posting only to find out it's not suitable.

Might even be able to drop it in to you at the weekened, as i'll be staying up your way Saturday & Sunday.

I think the only solution is to grind it off and replace it with a new timing case cover and end cap.

Nigel, for what it's worth, I parked next to Mark R at the Hestercombe Gardens show back in May this year. It certainly seems like he is who he says he is! If I had the tools, I'd lend them to him.
Out of interest, what recent events are you referring to? I've not been paying attention.

DaveB,

Good to hear from you, Thanks for the write up

Recently been to 'The Bristol Classic Car Show, where the South West Region and E30 Register were attending. Then popped along to the Wessex Region event at the Parham Steam Rally on the Saturday. Read all about that in the Club mag Page 68, my car was the one just out of picture to the left of the Gold E21!

Had a trip to Athelhampton House for the South West concours, just looking, not showing.

All the events i have been to this year have been great, and apart from the odd drop of rain, mainly too damn hot at times. Hoping for good weather at Gaydon, You going??

All the best,

Mark
