Word reaches me that someone else has given up metrics:

I wonder who that could be?

Which model are those wheels from phb? I don't normally like newer wheels on sixes but those look good... any more pics?? Am on the scout for some new rims myself as my metrics are wearing out.

cheers,

Mark

They are off an E60 (new 5) - I am not totally sure but i think its the 520-525 model:

I was very unsure of the looks when I first put them on as I am a firm believer of keeping things totally original. I don't like tham as much as the stock wheels, but the metrics are totally useless, and dangerous in the wet. Tread patterns and tyre design and materials have come a long way renently, so it seemed logical to depart from my metric rims.

Benefits include:

Much crisper handling and grip, especially in the wet

Less road noise

More effective braking

Less rolling resistance - the car decelerates slower at speed when i take my foot of the gas

Probably better fuel economy because of the above

Oh I forgot: tyre profile is... 225 65 R16. So not all that different to the stock wheels (I think they amounted to about 15.5 inches with the conversion). I personally think 16's are the best choice for a 635, as they look about the right size, and offer a good balance between comfort and handling. I have seen 6's with 18in rims, and I think they look rediculous.

Nice car, i like that charcoal black colour.

Can't wait to get some imperials, I've already had a few dangerous "metric" moments in my first 1000 miles . Have been looking out for some of the infamous style 5's off the 8-series, but they seem to have gone up in price recently!

I think 16's definately look better on chrome bumper cars, however 17's seem to suit the later Highline cars (which is what i have) better, purely from an aesthetic point of view. Mine is fitted with the larger metrics (245/45 R415 i think) so 17's would actually be closer to the originals as well.

Thats true - the highlines are heavier with the larger bumpers and the wing extensions. There are lots of people with 17inch wheels on highlines - they look good, I have seen chrome bumper models with 18's and they are too big.

I wasnt on the look out for these wheels, exactly, but I am happy with them. I was originally looking for a BBS style set, suck as style 145 or 133.

My wheels are style 134's. It is amazingly difficult to guestimate what a set of wheels actually look like before they are on the car!

Provided they look OK, I will always stick to BMW OEM wheels (including M, alpina etc), as they are 'proper' parts.

Sohlman's chrome bumper 635 has alpina's on it (dont know the style), but they are off the alpina 6, and I think they are the best looking wheels I have ever seen on a 6 series. There was aslo a set on ebay a few daus ago, but they did'nt sell:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=462 6571730

I dont think they would suit a highline.

As a proven style there are alpinas and replica alpinas like those on UKdavej's blue 6 - although his black 6 highline has a very smart set of rims indeed, and it was featured in last months Total BMW if you have seen a copy.

I have to say that the best wheels for 6's are on cars owned by members of this forum already, so have a look around at people's signature pic's and PM them for details if you need any.

The E60 Style 134s are very much in the spirit of the old "Wolfrace" alloys which were so coveted in the 1970s....

If you pay close attention to an E60, the style 134's are a bit dodgy; they sort of suit the car, but they aren't quite in fitting with the design of the rest of the vehicle somehow.

When I first saw a 5 with them fitted, I immediately thought that, and if you look at the other wheels fitted to the E60 range, they look more correct.

My neighbour accross the road has recently bought an E60 M5 and it has 19's or 20's on there I think, and they really look cool.

In the same way that some wheels can look too big for arches, of course they can also look too small sometimes (628 14's for instance).

I only comment as I have noticed the wheels that I have now got on my car on some local E60's, and I keep thinking this.

I agree, Sohlmans alpina's look just perfect on his six... but would look wrong on a highline.

I had my eye on these, maybe a bit blingy but I think they would have looked very good with my zinnobar red. With those and the white lotus leather, I would be the envy of every pimp and drug dealer in north london  !! Unfortunately they went for way above what I want to spend, so the search continues..

I do actually like BBS rims a lot - I used to have a set on a Mk2 golf I had a few years back - but I remember cleaning them, and that just precipitates withdrawl symptoms.

Unfortunately, they nicked the car, removed the wheels, and the car was found the next morning outside Copthal Stadium lying on the tarmak with no wheels on, literally sitting on the metal of the underside.

Also, to get them looking that good takes about 2 hours of cleaning and polishing - but yes they look great.

Staines, aye... BOYACKASHA!

Hmmm, maybe the gold bolts are a bit much but they're still nice wheels. Wouldn't pay £820 for them though!

No, but he's got TWO Mk.2 Golfs in his household now

No, never caught them!

And it wrote the car off - but it was fixed for the pay out at the time, and I put steel rims on after that since the MK2 golf was a notoriuosly easy car to steal.

The only reason I bought the second one is because the plate was worth more than the car. Buy yes my drive is full of relics from the 80's and early 90's - best cars were made then. In fact I reckon the MK2 Golf (especially the smaller bumper 8V GTI) is a candidate for the best all round car of all time - absolutely bullet proof.

That's right, the Bedford CF has never been beaten as an all-rounder
