Well you like what you like . . .

I'd like a E9 3.0CSI & an 840 Sport to go with my 635. Am I a coupe bore?

However, life is short so there's a good case for owning lots of different cars in a short space of time. I'm all for it - just need the funds, another garage & the ok from the Mrs to get started!

Well I was the same.........

In 2004 I had an 840Ci Sport, M3 Sport Evolution, the
320d and an Alpina C1 2.3. I got bored with BMW
quite quickly and sold all of it in the space of 4
months but did have an old E9 CSL when the M3
went. last year I had an Alpina B9 3.5 E28, a 520i
Touring. There isn't much left BMW wise I want to
own to be honest.

I've had loads of Alfa Romeos, a couple of Mercs
(200 Diseasel and a 350SLC), an Escort Mexico and
some very nice sixties Minis.

Now I've got a 249'000 mile 7 Series worth about
80p and a 1986 520i which is due to go to the
Nurburgring on Friday - either that or my £40 Ebay
Alfa 164 :-). I rescued a one owner 1966 Morris 1100
last year (now sold) which was unexpectedly fun to
drive (a big Mini). I've got a hankering for an early
Alfasud Ti but know that I'd have to look outrside the
UK to buy one as they all rusted away. I've always
liked Merc CE Coupes and the seventies S Class
W116. There's a very tidy P reg 350SE near me, so
cool.

The trouble with being a one marque person is that
all the other great and interesting cars pass you buy.
I don't want to become one of those guys you see at
the same car meets in 20 years time!

Haaaaaaa!! Classic!

How about Keanu C.Mycock, Helen Back............

On the subject of 8 Series - no, don't. I bought mine
from a BMW dealer with the warranty and boy, you
need it. Values are still dropping and they're no
better than an E39 to drive, only with less room.
A nice well cared for Porsche 928S is a better bet -
they're in a different league for performance and
driveability. More of a sports car, less of a Boulevard
cruiser. Really nice mid eighties example with loads
of history are down to £5-6000 - and they don't rust!

Reminds me of the joke we used to play when we were young 'uns. Phone up a pub & say, "This is Dave Hunt here, is my brother Mike in the bar?".

Oh, how we laughed when the barmaid shouted out over the din!

As far as the car choices go, I can see both sides of the argument.

Ian is into modding his M635 & obviously likes the qualities found in BMWs. After all, manufactures strive for brand loyalty. Audi are probably the closest rival but there's not much else that fit's the required profile.

My own choices veer from one day to the next. I love the 8-series for it's looks (just love pillarless coupes). So what if it's no better to drive than an E39 - nothing wrong with that. I assume you mean it's not sporty enough but you wouldn't pick an 840 for a back road blast anyway. Sadly, it's complexity means I'll probably never own one.

Never been able to get excited about the 928 although it is undoubtably a hell of a car.

Agree about the Merc CE's, slightly staid looking but classy with it & they're pillarless. Proper bank vault build apart from a tendency for the engine bay wiring loom to disintegrate. Same with the SECs although it's the rear bulkhead that disintegrates.

But a cabriolet? If you want to use it daily & on wet days then it'll have to be German. That leaves the Audi 80 & E30. The E30 wins the choice because there's plenty of support from owners & specialists whereas with the Audi you're on you own. Get a hardtop & you've got a pillarless coupe too!

Sure, there are plenty of interesting cars to own but the problem is they're either too old, too unreliable or too impractical to use as a daily runner. Doesn't stop me wanting them though.

Ditto...

I've been driving Volkswagens of all sorts now since I started driving 18 years ago(with 2 Mk.2 Escort Mexicos and a 2.3 litre Volvo 343 thrown in for good measure)

Bored by anything VW have made for the last 10 years, it's about time for a change so I've gone out and bought a 6 series that I've wanted to own for some time but never had the nerve to go out and buy one. Who knows where it'll end!

MK2 Mexico eh? I had a 1976 P plate Mex which
iIbought in Isleworth in 1986 for £300 and towd it
back to Newbury with a 1300 Escort Mark 2 Estate
and a big trailer! It was Jade green metallic with a
shagged 1600 Pinto engine and rusty wings. I fitted
new wings and inner/outer rear arches, did a
complete colour change to Diamond white with the
red Mexico stripes. I added a set of 7x13 Revolution
4 spoke rims with 205/60 tyres, Capri 2.8i Bilstein
front struts and brakes, a Sierra 1600 5 speed
gearbox and bought an exchange recon engine from
Ford - only £375 and they got a 1600 back in p/x
.
I sold it in 1988 for £1300 and saw it in Banbury in
around 1991 looking very sorry for itself.

I think the reg number was LLU356P but that might
have been a 1600 Sport I had as well.

I'm thinking about a late Alfa 164 Super Lusso 2.0 to
replace my 730i when it croaks. I missed a lovely
dark metallic green one on Ebay last week for £390.
Mind you. the 156 is becoming very cheap now,
around 1/3 the price of a four pot E46.

Its all about space and money for me rather than brand loyalty!

I love Bmw but i also love VW,s. Fair enuf there FWD but but they get away with it by handling so well ,& having probably the coolest Euro less is more look out there (with a few subtle mods).

People here asked me why i shelled out so much for a 20 yr old car, simply a) because it cannot be copied by anyone regardless of how much money they have they still have to get out there and find one,b) they look classy/evil enough to be still turning heads in another 20 years. As luck would have it i bought on the net and the car is near mint cond so its staying with me for the forseeable future.

Some time in future il have an M3 evo or e46, it must feel good to thrash the jap cars in something so user friendly and thats a strong point for me.

I wouldnt say im brand biast that much. in my younger days i had maximum respect for GSI 16v astras,Cavs and Nova,s, still do when i see a clean one, They did what they did well at the time for me!

Mk2 escorts AE86 GTcorollas are another couple, arguably 2 of the most chuckable rwds ever.

You will never get people to agree on cars it doesnt happen, were i am now if its got less than 5.7 litres they wouldnt look twice at it, its each to their own if everyone liked the same stuff there would be nothing to argue about.
