Thanks It's a 323i, manual, and is the least well equipped one I've seen! No OBC or AC, so hopefully nothing to go wrong. Couldnt resist a fully automatic roof when I got it though! potential for in the future!! It's also a 1998 model, so look out for me at 135mph on the A1 soon!

I've made the assumption it's a nikasil block. I did so when buying it and therefore paid what I felt was an appropriate price. I've done 8000 miles since buying it and it hasnt used any oil at all. It's also steady as a rock. Since I'm running it only on optimax (it's not really that much more expensive...) I think I'll escape the woes. And if it goes wrong I'll fix it. I won't be selling the car for the foreseable anyway. PS Thanks for the kind words about the state of the car...

my own 98 323 has a nikasil block with well over 130 k on the clock and as you do ;i only run it on optimax
touch wood
in the last 70k miles of ownership ive had no probs at all with it
the build date is under the bonnet on the drivers[think] side suspension mount
i checked mine it was week 6 of 98 so i missed out by 4 weeks
like i say my nikasil block is fine and dandy
and i think if nikasil was going to raise its ugly head it would have done years ago when cheap fuel was about and not now
is this your 1st vert bmw??

1st vert yes. Had '95 316 for four years before. Loved it, did 80k in it and was a big upgrade from the mk3 escort I had before!

i have a nikasil block in my beemer, and i run it on whatever fuel is near me when it want's juice, i also do the cold runs to the shop and back and mine runs perfect it has done 98,000 miles, i dont regard it as a issue anymore because when the problem was discoverd it was down to high sulpher in petrol, something which i believe we do not have in todays petrol regarding the emission,s control, and most nikasil engines was failing at around 30,000 miles, and mines done three times that amount and is perfect.

Lets hope we have a great summer so we can make the most of our cabs!
Mines a 97 323i power hood, aircon, leather, 60k and no engine problems at all. Had the compression tested by my local independent and all fine.
My 'day' car is an Audi A6 Quattro but the beemer puts a smile on my face every time I drive her!!
