My UK 1995 3.8 RHD ///M5 (VIN is GE00269) has a problem : the air con doesn't work :-(

The garage working on the car are BMW specialists (not main dealers) and I do trust them (they have kept me involved all the time) but after spending a LOT of money (over UK£1,000 and rising) and time (they have had the car for around 6 weeks) on my car, they have shown me that it must have had a wiring problem at some point in the past. One part of the wiring loom has been damaged, and rather than replace it with the correct part, somebody has bodged it by creating their own loom.

I would like to replace this with the correct part, but the garage are unable to track down a part number. The label which would normally be attached to the loom is missing. They even involved the local BMW dealers, but after they ordered the part number which the dealer suggested (61.10.8.366.723), it was incorrect. My copy of ETK shows that this part is a "cable harness sector ctr" (which seems to be the correct item.) However, this part number only applies to cars between 09/93 and 01/95. My car was first registered in 03/95 (but shows a build date of 09/94). I am now wondering if there is a later part which supersedes this one. Some of the research done by the garage suggests that there was a change in the control mechanism between the engine and the air con in this period ... basically when the engine is at full power it disconnects the air con to gain a few extra HP.

The section of loom in question is the one which enters the bottom of the big round connector next to the diagnostics socket. It's in the nearside (left) front inner wing, beside the suspension turret, and routes between the heater valves and the fuse box. It ends in 4 rectangular plugs inside the car.

Can anybody help me to identify the part number?

Philip

I have a slighlty later car registered 09/95 (VIN 0000363)

Do you know if the label should be visible from within the engine bay or is it actually in the car.

I can have a look tonight and let you know if I find anything

Richard

Many thanks!

My understanding is that it should be visible from within the engine bay - i.e., if you follow the piece of wiring loom which comes out of the bottom of this connector, there should be a label with a BMW part number (normally an 11 digit number) on it.
